Food (child) safe coloured pens for turning

I don't think any colouring pen or ink could be sold if it was poisonous or harmful to anyone . The amount you'd use colouring a bit of wood would be tiny ! Splinters would be more dangerous .

How thick rough boards to start with before planing

Buy it planed . I got some 8x2 oak free . Then spent forever planing it , running it through the bench saw , planing it again . I can't believe how much sawdust I made for so little good wood ! Honestly 2/3rds of the oak was sawdust . AND MY POOR OLD TRITON PLANER IS NOT AS GOOD AS IT WAS .

Good quality ply is the best . I've done a few bowls , vases and snowmen . Just glue up a load of ply and away you go . If you turn whatever it is your doing with the glue up lines running parallel with the lathe bed you get some smart patterns appearing but when the delaminates it can be a bit...

    Large Forstner bits (55mm plus)
