First Dining Table project : Some advice needed

Thanks for the input, I will adjust my design to use 10mm glass. I will keep scratching my head over the design of the support structure. In terms of allowing for wood movement, I am assuming that allowing 1-2 mm extra in the channel would be sufficient? I want the tabletop to be as flush as...

First Dining Table project : Some advice needed

Thanks Mike, I completely agree with you on the support structure side of things, I am concerned about the glass effectively floating between the two slabs, and how much tendency there will be for the two halves of the table top to want to move further away from each other. That is a very...

I want to drill a hole in my saws

Was going to suggest the same, could even modify the cam rack design to incorporate some neo magnets

First Dining Table project : Some advice needed

Hi guys Hope you are all having a fantastic festive period. After doing small projects for craft fairs for the last 8 months or so, I have decided to take the next 6 months off and make some things for the house. The first project is a dining table and chairs ( why walk when you can run eh? )...

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Thanks Nev I think I have decided on forgoing the chuck for now, I am going to start off with pens and smaller spindle related things to begin with, and then add the chuck later on if I want to take on a more varied number of projects. Funds are limited at the moment so I want to make sure I...

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Cheers Chris, got all that covered :D I only have a 12x8 foot workshop so dust is a constant bone of contention!

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Thanks for the reply Simon, what you are saying certainly makes sense. I have taken on board all the comments from here and have done some more research, and I think I am fairly confident that as things stand I am looking at doing spindle turning, and that a chuck is not required for this...

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Thanks Dalboy I get what you are saying, whilst at the current point in time I do not fancy getting into bowls etc, I have not turned a single thing in my life so who knows which direction I might end up going once I start, I guess I had just not realized that there are a load of other bits...

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Thanks for the response, could you elaborate a bit? Do you mean bowls, goblets etc? I am a complete novice when it comes to turning so from my standpoint most of the different types of items you can make look just as hard as eachother lol

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Hi Phil, thanks for the response.I guess I am of the youtube generation and do not own much in the way of actual literature! That being said, I will certainly take your advice and pick up a book. I have a pretty well stocked workshop (sans turning equipment) so the grinder situation is already...

Never used a lathe, have a couple of questions

Hi Guys I am going to be purchasing a lathe in the next week or two, most likely the entry level Axminster one. I would like to start by turning pens and rings, but I am a bit confused as to what I need to get. So far, the equipment I know I need to pick up is : A lathe (duh) A pen mandrel...

    Bri's projects.

Nice one. I have always wanted to make a bird Box, but there are just too many cats around my estate for me to put one up. Need to come up with a cat proof bird box :) Keep up the good work!

Edited - Which track saw (rather than which circular saw)?

I have the Erbauer track saw that you linked on the screwfix site. It is the only track saw I have ever owned so I have no real basis for comparison, but I am quite happy with it. It has a soft start motor which is nice, and I have found the cut quality to be quite good. The only 2 negatives...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Don't worry about being picky, I am really new to the whole woodworking lark and am happy to receive any form of feedback. I think it is a combination of not picking the right wood for the project, and there was certainly a bit of "how it came out" in there. The other face had more of the...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Made a wine rack, Maple with walnut splines. Not too happy with the actual wood, as its got a lot of green in it, but that is down to my poor selection process lol. Was a bit tricky to get the holes drilled at the right angles to make the bottles sit fairly level.
