Does being right or lft-handed determine which way round a room you go when painting ?

Being right handed I tend to work from right to left. This however does not mean I start in one spot and work around the room in an orderly fashion. Other things will influence how I tackle the job. including if there are large items of furniture left in the room, which have to be moved back and...

    Business to business dealings

One has to be wary because certain things are not covered. A friend of mine purchased a new router for his business, which , when he got it back to the workshop, didn't work. The firm he bought it from would not refund his money, and after advice from Trading Standards, had to settle for a...

    Electra Beckum HC260 Help

This part of the mechanism is very basic in design - as I remember it - nothing as sophisticated as bearings but plastic wheels and cogs slipped over spindles and held in place with circlips. So any wear and tear will be in the plastic components. So new plastic bits , rather than bearings...

    Electra Beckum HC260 Help

I had a problem with my machine where the belt kept slipping off. It turned out that there was too much wobble on the large wheel you have marked as '2'. the newly attached cog might be high lighting the fact that the two larger plastic cogs/ wheels are a bit worn and need replaced.

    Stain woes

If there are any glue residues - even if you think you have removed it all - it will stain darker. It is like a magic colouring book only evident when the stain is applied. It might be better - if you are confident about the accuracy of your moulded profile - to finish it first, as is done...

Can anybody beat this for old equipment

Hi Hi there Fergie 307. An interesting summing up of the case for your conclusions as to date. Mine was just a general observation based on the printing on the box. Judging by the cross-cross texture of the image, I believe it's an early example of Half tone printing. I remember using this...

Can anybody beat this for old equipment

A lovely bit of kit, but judging by the print image on the box does this not date from a later period?

    Polishing acrylic pu varnish?

I have used Rustins Plastic Coating in the past. You can build up quite a layer by applying subsequent coats. There is no reason for orange peeling as it can be cut back with wet and dry to get an ultra- smooth. finish. I found it better to wait several days after application before applying...

Rotary tool... Dremel or something else?

The best way to achieve an oval shaped hole is by using a plunge router and template. For a hole 55mm deep it would be best to use a more powerful 1/2" router.

Countertop waste chute with lid? ... Just a suggestion.

    Decent Brad point drill bits

I have been quite happy with the ones I bought from Rutlands. They sell two different grades - the better ones being in M2 steel. The only downside from my point of view was that the better quality ones, only come in full millimetre sizes, whereas the cheaper ones are available in 1/2 mm size...

What might this be? ... I do know, but do you?

I have to confess to eating 'alouette pate' in the past.

    First seeds of 2024

Great..........love it! The wife made some jam from our surplus last year, but it might be worth trying a sweet chilli sauce this year, as well.

What might this be? ... I do know, but do you?

Something to do with wine - though for the life of me I cannot guess what, Are those lead inserts in the arched top to give it a bit more weight?

    First seeds of 2024

What on earth does one do with 60 chilli plants  . 4 plants - 2 Aleppo and two Apache will easily supply enough for our household of 3 adults. In fact , I still have some chillies saved in the freezer from last year. This year I've experimented with trying to grow one of the Aleppo...

    Roofing. Galv sheeting replacing slates.

You will need breathable membrane under the profiled sheeting to stop any condensation getting through. On cold and frosty days it can be a real problem, Corrugated sheeting often goes on roofs that have purlins fixed on trusses. There will be a rail running along the length of the roof at...

    Hardwood waste for pricing joinery

An old rule of thumb when buying sawn hardwood stock in cubic feet ,( for say a kitchen), was to buy a third more. It will come in random widths as 4 inches and up or 6 inches and up. The maximum of the 'up' is around 10 inches. With waney edge boards it is best to purchase at least half as...

    It Stopped Raining

I use it on the path between my raised beds which is covered in slate chippings. But, only after I have hand weeded it. It helps suppress further growth, though only for a while. I expect to have to weed it at least a couple more times during the growing season. That the Ancient Romans...

Are these chair parts commercially available?...

Ha! ha!, my mistake - could well be the name of the design, since I don't speak the lingo, I still have one of them in my workshop that I was meant to repair for a dealer - though in the end he told me to keep it as it wasn't cost effective. Just had a quick look at the name stamp...

Are these chair parts commercially available?...

Unless you are at the top end of the market, making dining chairs became something that wasn't worth bothering with, Years ago the stripped-pine shops used to buy in cheap unfinished Beech chairs from somewhere like Slovenia. There was no way anyone could compete on price. They are still...
