    Wood chips

If you've got any allotments near you, I'm sure they'd take them off your hands (we can't get enough for ours). Also, bear in mind that there's no need to let them break down before applying as a mulch. It tends to be more of an issue if you're digging them in, and even then the nitrogen robbing...

Chip breaker - out of square

Thanks, Andy! I was nervous about wrecking a new file on it. Your comment gives me the confidence to give it a go.

Chip breaker - out of square

The chip breaker on my no. 4 plane is out of square with the sides (see photo below). I'm not entirely sure if this really affects things (complete novice here), but if it does, then I'd like to get that edge square with the sides. My question is: how would I go about getting a precisely square...

Bench grinder wheel for old Wolf grinder

Hi all, I have a fairly old 6" Wolf grinder (see photo). I purchased a couple of new wheels from Axminster which I naively assumed would fit. They're 31.75mm bore, but are a fraction too small. Does anyone know if these should fit? I don't want to get too heavy handed with getting them on to...

Elliott Progress 1 - where to start?

I checked for slop in the main spindle today and pleased to say it felt really solid. I've ordered a manual so will be having a read through that later in the week O:)

Elliott Progress 1 - where to start?

Thanks Trevanion - sounds promising then. I'll give the spindle a wiggle in the morning and see how it feels. I'll also get hold of some Gadus grease and top it up. Thanks for the YouTube link. I'll have to watch that on the weekend. Thanks again for the info. marcros - yep, the table seemed a...

Elliott Progress 1 - where to start?

Hi guys, I've just made an impulse buy of an Elliott Progress 1 bench drill  Right now, I don't know what I don't know, so I'm on a fact finding mission. My questions right now, are: 1) How do identify the exact model (I'm finding lathes.co.uk quite good for this so far) 2) How can I...

Cutting a semicircle in mild steel

Problem solved. I managed to get my hands behind the engine just enough to be able to attach the proper rear lifting eye. The front one was already on. Hopefully shouldn't have any problems now. Lazurus - going to order a 2 leg lifting chain set tomorrow. I watched a nasty video of a rope...

    Course recommendations

Thanks guys. I've already done a MIG course at my local college, but no general metalworking courses that aren't full time unfortunately. Jimmy.

Cutting a semicircle in mild steel

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll use a cutting disc to take as much off as I feel comfortable with, and then flap disc from there. Good idea with the cardboard template. The metal I'm using is 4mm so should be fine (I hope). Removing one cylinder head bolt is apparently the recommended...

Cutting a semicircle in mild steel

Hi all, I'm trying to fashion a rear lifting eye to remove the 300tdi from my Discovery 1. I've never done any metalwork. Thus far, I've taken a 4mm mild steel bar and bent it at a right-angle using a vice, then drilled in a couple of holes: I now need to shape a semi circle around the lower...

    Course recommendations

Thanks for the reply. I'll sort out a sketch at some point. I don't doubt the willingness of the community here to help out with advice and suggestions, but ideally I'd like to get some hands-on experience with a tutor if possible. Failing that, I'll definitely be asking for more advice here...

    Course recommendations

Hi all, I'm keen to learn about metalworking, but struggling to find any courses in my area (Norfolk) that aren't full-time. Does anyone know of any in the Norfolk area (or even further afield if an intense course over a few days)? The only thing I could find was the Axminster engineering...
