    Metal Square Saved.

If it was dried in the sunlight (or ambient heat) then I think you’re right. IIRC, the sun uses fusion (by combining hydrogen atoms to create helium) rather than fission which is splitting atoms.

    3D printer location

My 3D printer lives on a shelf in the workshop covered with a polythene bag to keep (most of) the dust off. I move it onto the workbench when in use. Filament is kept dry in the house.

Rotary tool... Dremel or something else?

Exactly what I did for 2xAA batteries powering this lamp except I have a router so I hogged out the waste with a forstner bit, opened out to the correct size with the router then squared the corners with a chisel. Sorry haven’t got any pictures of the bottom. Edit: just seen your second post...

Just moved to the UK (Leamington / Kenilworth, Warwickshire). Where to buy used but quality, solid wood furniture?

Locke and England hold auctions in Leamington Spa. Could be worth a look. Also have you tried the shop at the tip on Princess Drive in Leamington?

    Labelling system

As others have said, there is a modern equivalent to the old Dymo embossing machines. These print using a thermal process, directly onto coloured tapes. They look a lot better than the old labels and can be set to print different styles, sizes, on one or two lines, etc

Looking for a supply of straight-grained ash

Being unable to find a suitable supply of the raw ash for bell stays, I have bought stay blanks from Nicholson Engineering. (I found spindle blanks for wood turning are rarely long enough). Please let me know if you have any luck sourcing some. I asked at Yandles last year - they had nothing...

    Speaker boxes/cabinets

IIRC correctly there were two models produced by Roger’s for the Beeb. LS5/9s and the smaller LS3/5s.

    Speaker boxes/cabinets

Mission Electronics have a long history of building speakers with woofers above the tweeters.

    Mystery thing

Are they the motorhome equivalent to 10mm sockets and pencils and you’ve discovered the hiding place?

    Probably a stupid question.

Hopefully not the piece of wall where the wood will make contact. You’d be one very squashed fly 😅

Do I need a track saw / table saw?

For years I used a home-made plywood track and circular saw. This comprised a long piece of 3mm ply for the saw base to run on with a thicker (probably 12mm) straight piece glued onto it to make a fence. The base is cut to suit the saw by running the saw down the fence for the first time then...

New router lift needed/Sauter Vs UJK?

I used a small plunge router upside down in a table before deciding to get a dedicated router motor and lift. (I got the Rutland unit and mounted it in a piece of kitchen worktop. Pictures In this post) I find it is far quicker and easier to move the router (and therefore the bit) up and down by...

    Stuck thermostatic shower valve

I have successfully dismantled and rebuilt a faulty (sticking) shower cartridge. I think it was a Bristan .

Surely a huge gap in the market?

I think the smaller Inca machines were there in terms of quality and were pretty accurate. Although fairly compact they were substantially built so not necessarily lightweight. Unfortunately they ceased manufacture years ago.

    Hall Effect

North/South won’t matter. However, the field density will be greatest closer to the poles. In addition, in the first image the field is in line with the sensor and in the second, perpendicular. It difficult to say whether the second option will work without understanding how sensitive the...

    Garden fence replacement....

Faced with a similar situation, I reduced the width of the panel so it could be slotted in at one end and cleared the post at the other without lifting. It was fixed in place by screwing it to a piece of (treated) wood placed into the groove of the second post.

    Home library

Never heard the term Tonk strip before, always called them bookcase strips - you learn something new every day. We have these although I don’t like them as they sit proud. IMHO they are marginally better than holes on 32mm centres but if you can router a housing, flush will look better. I’d...

    Need to escape/reset

That’s good news. As others said, every journey starts with that most important first step and it sounds like you’ve taken a few already. There may be some bumps in the road but stay positive and communicate with your partner and I’m sure you’ll get it sorted. You’ve got this!

Making a sturdy-ish workbench with foldable/detachable legs that does not wobble?

Peter Millard / Ten Minute Workshop has a couple of YouTube videos on making a foldable workbench. IIRC it was quite stable. Might be worth a look…
