    Advice on lacquer spray

When I was importing oak furniture from Poland and needing to re-finish small items we used to use Morrells rattle cans. It's relatively easy to use and dries pretty quick. But as others have said, wear a mask. When you spray and find you have small particles of dust in the finish, simply rub...

    Ring tool

Thank you @Paul Hannaby . I too like using the ring tool it may have been you who showed me how it's used. I think this is probably the most misunderstood tool in the woodturning arsenal. I use one and can't say I really understand what makes it cut as well as it does, in the method in which...

    De Haviland Mosquitoes.

Good point, Nick!! Why pad a seat if the parachute does the job? Interestingly enough, another visit I made more recently was to the Martin-Baker factory for the modern ejection seats. As a lighting engineer I was doing designs for ligthing their area for packing the parachutes. The modern seats...

    De Haviland Mosquitoes.

It's great to see the models here. They're beautifully made. In London Colney, Hertfordshire there is, of course the De Havilland Museum. In the 60s I was taken there as a child. I don't know if this was a normal thing. I don't think it was, but I was allowed to sit in one. This could have been...

Getting glasses to fit over mask - which mask works ?

I wear the same GVS Elipse mask as above with glasses, Than I use a Honeywell Bionic face shield as well for impact protection. It works well for me when turning.

How would you rate the UK's handling of this pandemic?

Have to admit to having not read all this thread, but UK ranks 5th in the list of countries with the highest Covid death toll. Then yesterday, when BoJo announced the stricter quarantine measures, he fluffed it again! In Australia you arrive and are taken by military to a quarantine facility...

Connecting a PIR to light fitting

@clogs having a PIR under a cabinet will mean having to keep waving under the cabinet to "remind" it that you're still there. I work in lighting. In most internal situations, rather than use a PIR we would use a Microwave sensor. These are similar to PIR but instead of the device looking for...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

Interesting. So, in order to pay for all goods and services etc. why do governments tax the people? Why not simply print the money they need? It would make them more sure of re-election.

    From experience

You're right. You can make all the production savings, but you still won't get over the fact that quality does cost. If you're hell bent on buying the cheapest machinery on the market, you'll always be buying cr@p, no matter who's making it. Plus, if you're wanting to support British jobs, then...

    From experience

If a manufacturer is making bigger quantities of anything, they can negotiate better prices on materials. You can also find it can make the difference on transport costs too. It costs little more to send a van to deliver with 200 motors onboard than it does with 20. When paint spraying lathe...

    From experience

The other consideration here is that the Sedgwick Similar-ish model is £3300 today because so many in the market don't by that model. If they did, and Sedgwick were making X,000 more of those a week, the price would be lower and more like it was. The problem is we all want good engineering and...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

I doubt there's too much profiteering by business. In a weak economy it would be very brave of any individual business to decide to cut themselves a larger slice of profit. Besides, prices are risingon everything, not just tools. There's a possibility that China, the source of many tools, may...

I’ve heard of inflation but this is ridiculous.

The price rises are happening in all areas on everything we buy. Weekly groceries are costing more. This is because to pay out £billions the Government are printing money. Each time you increase the £££ in circulation you decrease it's value. So we're lowering the value of the £ on the world market.

    Axminster AWSL lathe

That would be great for getting you started. It's amazing what you can turn on a small lathe. All you need is a sturdy bench to mount it on. That said, I've used mine on top of a

    Axminster Price Hikes

Price rises will be on most things across the board. No change in quality. If anything quality will drop as manufacturing try to maintain old prices. This is import tariffs. Nothing of that goes to makers.

    Axminster Price Hikes

It will be interesting to see what others sellers do. If the rises are from suppliers and the general costs of importing, then all other sellers will need to follow suit. The result could be that fewer people upgrade and more leave the market giving up home workshops. As it is, I heard a few...

    Donating a Tree

National Trust have a scheme for exactly this for planting trees in Hatfeild Forest. This is one of the oldest forest in England. It's located in Essex.

    Axminster Price Hikes

Axminster has a printed catalogue. If this is renewed only once a year, then they have 1 opportunity for a price rise in the year. A no deal Brexit will mean the UK will trade on exclusively WTO rules, without the benefit of the EU negotiated WTO tarrifs. Instead, the UK needs to negotiate it's...

    Lathe Light

I started well at keeping everything swept and clean, even with a lathe. The problem I have started when wood storage grew into the working area and you simply can't sweep the chips and dust from between the logs. And I MUST get the extraction gear connected and installed properly.
