How to achieve this finish? Antique/aged oak?

That’s super, thanks for the replies. Hadn’t heard of liming wax, learn something new each day. I’ll pick some up. I still have a small amount of poly x terra, so can run a test with that. Guess it’ll be a case of seeing how much I need to raise the grain. I don’t want it to look overly...

How to achieve this finish? Antique/aged oak?

Hi, Looking for some suggestions on how to achieve this type of finish. I’m making a set of bedside tables in a mix of solid white oak and veneered oak mdf. Wondering if anyone has any tips to achieve this type of finish? I was think maybe a base of osmo poly x tints, and then maybe a wax...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

OK, quick little update. Spent the last day righting these wrongs. All seven doors are looking good now. I'm happy with the gaps on all of them and I'm pleased I spent the time getting them right. Used a variety of methods in the end as each one required a something a little different. One door...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

Well that makes sense. I'm actually not too far off being parallel, it's more just latch side being too big. Hinge side and top and all pretty good, certainly enough that I'm happy with. I know my limitations and I'm not expecting a dead on 2mm all round, just need to get to a place I'm happy...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

To be fair to myself, these are the first doors I’ve hung. Wanted to give it a go and thought making up a template would have been the best way. I think there’s been some movement and although my template was fine, it was made up before the doors were delivered, so was kind of doing it a bit...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

Seems like the easiest route, although I’m curious as to why the suggest seems to be hinge side rather than latch side? I know normally the doors are shot into the linings, but these are new linings and no architraves/handles on yet, so feel it would be better to true up the lining to the door...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

Aiming to fix the lining rather than cover with architrave. Last resort I guess I could unscrew all the lining, remove and then reduce the width slightly.

    Fixing door lining gaps...

Might not have been clear. The gap on the latch side is 4mm too big, therefore it’s around 6mm, so packing hinges out is only going to bring it to 3mm vs 5mm, which is better, but still not fixing it. Hadn’t thought of putting the strip on the hinge side. I have 36mm x 4mm strip wood that I...

    Fixing door lining gaps...

Hi, Following from my thread about replacing door linings, I've now got round to fitting the doors. I had seven in total and I've had mixed results in fitting, but I'm hoping they are all things that I can rectify. So out of the seven doors, 5 are 686mm wide, one 610mm and one 533mm wide. For...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

Thought I’d give a little update on this. After much thought, mulling, measuring and planning, I decided not to pull down the walls. Instead I’ve cut out the existing door frames and then added new stud work around the door opening, made new linings. The door lining run flush with the landing...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

Yes, they are indeed fink trusses. Should be fine I imagine. Thank you @Thingybob - can't say I'm over the moon about doing it, but hopefully a little more planning and I'll feel a bit happier about where I'm heading with it. Might have a look at floor plans over the weekend and see if there's...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

Thanks @SamG340 and @Spectric - both good suggestions. A 1100l wheelie bin might be useful, especially if I can wheel it down to the end of the road for collection. Thinking about it, I could knock up a flat trolley bed to wheel a bigger hippo bag out. Good to know the options. My final...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

That's exactly how I'm thinking. The walls look like a bodge to start with. Just tacking onto that is going to be a bodge on top of a bodge. I'd feel much happier in the long run about having a decent foundation to start with, even if it does mean a slightly larger outlay. In terms getting rid...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

OK, after a week or more of 'pondering' I think I'm settling on pulling the walls down and rebuilding better stud walls. I've had a further poke at the door lining of the bathroom today. The 2x1 batten that the door lining is 'fixed' to moves all over the place. I'm guessing the plasterboard was...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

Add to this the lovely chipboard floorboards and it all becomes a bit of a pig of a job! I'm guessing that none of these 1st floor internals walls are providing any structural support? I've checked them all and they're all the same. Just wondering what the process is for this. Presumably it...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

I know, right?! Apparently it was popular in the 80s as a way to not require a joiner on site to make up the stud walls. We’re not intending on moving from this house in a very long time, so want to make sure it’s done right now. Also, if we’re replacing the internal walls, I guess it’ll be...

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

I’m not too worried about putting them up and plasterboarding them. We need to get all the ceilings skimmed anyhow, so guess it would extend that. It’s more the total disruption whilst we’re still living in it.

Minimum door linings for solid internal doors

That's what I'm (reluctantly) leaning towards. Shudder at the though of having to redo all the walls though! (Work and cost.) This is the layout upstairs. The markers (1&2) indicate where those photos were taken.
