Post a photo of the last thing you made

Finished this part of a timber frame building the other day. May be bending the rules a bit sharing a part of something that's finished hah

    Interesting response from Screwfix

Is such vitriol really necessary? Plus I'm not claiming all regulation is detrimental... Alas you're clearly not willing to put in the necessary effort to have an interesting discussion, you damn yourself to mediocrity.

    Interesting response from Screwfix

No of course not. I'm saying there's an entirely different attitude that is both safer and considerably more productive - ensuring staff are fit, rather than ensuring the bar is so low that nobody could fall below it. Whether that happens through company policy, contracts or a concerted effort...

    Interesting response from Screwfix

Or actually training staff to not be pathetic bloody wimps that can't even pick up a bag of cement. Nope, mediocrity (or worse) it is.

Yes all solid elm. Below is the construction: Wedged M&Ts for the corners, dominos in the middle. Panels are made from adjacent pieces in the slab they were cut from to ensure a grain continuity. Glad you like the detail on the middle piece (mullion I believe?) took a lot of fiddling in...

    Invasion of US Capitol building

It's my opinion that this event was nowhere near what would constitute a terrorist attack or an attempt at insurrection. The politicians (professional and amateur) claiming this are doing it for well, a political end, naturally. Not to say active support of this by politicians large or small is...

How Necessary is a Specialised Scrub Plane?

I'm so confused as to how there's so much contention around this tool! They're bloody marvellous. The curved blade is a completely differently planing experience. I usually scrub plane every inch of slabs I plan to break down for 3 reasons: To get a good idea of what grain is where (plus...

    Which Diamond Stone?

I can recommend Atoma. Had mine for 3 years and still great. May be loads of good brands now as suggested so far. Atoma were one of the first brands doing monocrystalline plates which are considerably more durable. I don't think any of the plates suggested so far are monocrystalline however.

Another ID thread - oak or elm?

Definitely oak. Twisted like oak, medullary rays and has the distinctive patina an old piece of oak has.

    Infrared heaters.

As long as it's airtight. Doesn't take much air changeover to make a humidifier ineffective. I've just gapfilled etc. my workshop and use a desiccant dehumidifier. Good combo with a dry heat source like a stove.

So you deleted the shill thread Mike. Care to explain?

Humanity's inability to wield power justly is unerring, you have no idea the danger of the ideas you're playing with. Yes there are aspects that allow bad actors to amplify their activities, and concepts like social media are causing culture and resultant politics to bifurcate. Given time and...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

Yes, of course. This example was used to refute the point specifically that the mere concept of money itself is the driver of fly-by-nightery. Nothing to do with rose-tinted glasses, the above example was used as it should be tangible to most readers of this forum. Pick any part of the world...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

It's definitely related to the economic health of a system. The less economic activity there is, the greater the incentive to swindle. Saying it doesn't work because Money is reductive. Consider 1950s Britain (or most wealthy countries of the world at that time), regulations were minimal and...

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

If they're effective standards, what reason do we have not to adopt them independently? Same goes for any EU law, I don't see why we need to all sign the same bit of paper. It seems the case to me that the health of the body of standards relies on non compliance and adversity to keep it in check.

Are standards necessary / useful in the UK?

Well, I think the question posed here intends to ask whether standards are best formed from the ground up or mandated from on high. The value of standards themselves is obvious, how they're formed and instituted isn't. Standards typically either improve efficiency (replaceable parts) or reduce...
