Let's discuss furniture design and fine work

I believe Jacob was initially referring to my screw on legs. Thats Ok, they are screw on I don't have a lathe and a very small workshop. I struggled to find suitable Oak legs, Its a hobby. We needed a coffee table and it fits the bill. I hadn't seen any of a similar design till I saw these posts...

Let's discuss furniture design and fine work

Some really interesting posts, I thought the "Princess from a frog" illustrated proportion really well. Some items like the tall ladder back chair are out of proportion but can "sit" very well in the right location and look stunning. I have actually sat on one and it feels to me more of an...

    aftermarket replacement drill driver batteries

I have two Makita cordless drills an old 7.2 v and a slightly newer 12 volt with a "keyless chuck". The original batteries ran out and I replaced the 12 Volt ones with a make called FLOUREON and the 7.2v ones with a make called CREABEST both are just as good as the originals were. I think I paid...

    Harrogate woodworking show

Went to the show yesterday (Sunday), first time and contrary to most posts, I was disappointed. I had heard all about the Harrogate show and perhaps expected too much. Had I been a budding turner then I would have loved it. Yes there were stalls where you could get chisels of all shapes and...

    UK Travel Ideas

A visit to the UK wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the Lake District. Take the Lakeside and Haverthwaite restored railway to Lakeside and take steamer ride along the Lake stopping at Bowness and Ambleside. Get on and off where you like and explore both towns, some great places to eat and...

    One family's solar story

Hi Dibs, Missed your post initially. The forms are for “Notification” and application. My installer filled mine in so not sure which number they are. Some DNO’s charge if they have work to do for the application. You are right the rating is what comes out of the inverter and not the array. The...

    Optimising hot water schedule

We have a similar system to yours. On checking gas usage on the suppliers app we found 13p or 14p’s worth of gas used every other morning whilst we were away. The hot water and central heating were all off. Contacted the supplier and it does not happen now. No explanation was given but we...

    One family's solar story

Not such an easy answer as it happens. In domestic applications, if you have a solar array and your house is on the grid you must inform the local DNO under 3.68KWH or get permission if over, irrespective of feeding back. If you are completely off grid, well the advice is unclear but seems to...

    One family's solar story

If you intend to generate more than 3.68kwh then you need to ask permission from from your DNO (Distribution Network Operator) showing how you intend to wire up the system. No permission required under this but you have to tell them. Most new systems will need permission which could be granted...

    One family's solar story

The idea of using batteries of electric vehicles to feed back electricity to the grid in times of need is not a possibility at the moment. This would fall under the SEG (smart export guarantee) scheme, and you may need a micro generation certificate. However the main problem is that the energy...

    Solar panels.

Phil According to the BBC solar installations have gone up to 3000 per month in the UK from around 1000 in July 2020. Discussions over the FIT are not relevant to new installations as we now have the SEG (smart export guarantee) which according to the law must not be zero! Which means energy...

    Solar panels.

Just to add, the best advice we were given was to check our base load of electricity. This is around 180 watts. We then also checked our daily usage which was around 13 kw . From these figures you can work out the size of your array and battery storage. We also just fitted a £39 timer to turn on...

    Solar panels.

Phil Just had 12 400w panels fitted to our almost south facing roof with a 30 deg pitch. Total 4.8 kw with a 5 kw inverter and 10kw battery. Most days so far we send electricity to the grid but it’s only been a month. Winter will be much different. I would like to point out that most of the...

Is this a fair price for oak boards?

You can have a look at timber in Bleasdales. Its a small operation and he cannot dimension anything for you but there is a joinery shop opposite and he can, for a small price. Hoghton timber has some great pieces but they are on two sites and the organisation is woeful, at least for small...

Is this a fair price for oak boards?

There are a few timber yards selling hardwoods in Lancashire. I recently collected five Oak 7 foot boards averaging between 6 -8 inches wide and just over an inch thick from FH Bleasdale in Chorley, £30 per board. Hoghton Timber In Preston sells some excellent hardwood boards but they don't like...

    Half-Half-Half method

Thank you all, valid points. I can do as Phil says and use two cutters, or as MikeK says and don’t complicate matters and use butt joints, I have done so previously and also used pocket screws. MikeK mentioned learning a new technique and Guineafowl gets the point that once set up all the joints...

    Half-Half-Half method

Thank you spectric, These will only be small ply drawers under a workbench. I can hand cut dovetails or box joints. I just liked the simplicity of the single set up and thought I would give it a try. The lock joint is superb and I just might buy one after I get a new pillar drill and a planer.

    Half-Half-Half method

Hello, Just having a go at making drawers using the above method. I have a small router table and I am using 12mm ply with a 6mm router bit. After a few try’s this is as close as I can get. It seems to me if I try to deepen the groove in what would be the side of the drawer I would also...

    Suggestions for future heating system

Really interesting posts. I agree with the point about insulation before anything else. Insulation of Walls is covered by building regulations in the UK. Chapter C,5, Walls. There is a map (quite a poor one but more detailed version is available at a cost). This map shows exposed areas of the...
