    Runaway saw blade

This might have ended in death, or worse.

This box made for a friend uses 2x10 structural lumber. I found a cupped board in the store and hoped it would cup additionally at home after being resawn. It did not, so I had to shape a concave top with a scraper and convex sides with a plane.

    Saw stop ( USA )

Having a wonky gait because of a pinched nerve in the back and a right arm tremor because of Parkinson's, I am aware that any woodworking injury could ground me. Consequently I am (or try to be) very cautious in the shop. Though old age makes me more susceptible to injury it also makes me...

    Saw stop ( USA )

The Power Tool Institute in the USA, an agglomerate of tool makers including Festool, owned by TTS Tooltechnic which is also the parent company of Sawstop, says this about the Consumer Product Safety Commission's proposed active injury mitigation on all table saws...

    Saw stop ( USA )

Jacob - I just bought this pushstick (pushblock) from Jeff Allred, a maker in Texas. It is 24" long, made of cherry, and it has a commanding presence. This and a modicum of care will keep me from harm. Before you say "too big" or "too heavy" I'll answer, "It's just right". Thank you and others...

Why do we get such a limited choice of planers/machines in the UK?

Northfield Woodworking Machinery https://www.northfieldwoodworking.com/jointers/jointers.htm is still functioning, servicing old machinery and, I believe, selling new. I dreamed of getting one, but haven't the lifetime or the space. Addendum- Maybe not, as their website is not well maintained.

Royal Mail - complete ban on bladed items from 22nd April

That decision would go over well here in the USA where we laugh at bringing a knife to a gunfight :giggle:

This is a lovely piece, reverential, graceful, and perfect in its setting.

Sadly, we in the U.S. have bought into the silliness that the Second Amendment applies to individuals. Consequently, firearms are used far more often for suicide than self-protection. However, we also were the first country to mandate airbags in new cars in 1998. We are weird but passionately...

Table Saw kickback and trimmed finger (Graphic description & images)

There are no wooden push sticks available in the U.S. We are united in our opaque front. I made mine from 9 mm white oak. I think it looks rakish.

    Saw stop ( USA )

Jacob - I cannot imagine feeling safe with my hand next to a rotating blade that could maim me. Having done a couple of dumb things in my life, I have seen the opposing forces of stupidity and divine intervention. I understand your point. I hope you can respect another's wish to have a great...

    Saw stop ( USA )

The UK and Europe are ahead of the US. Riving knives became mandatory here in 2009, well after I bought my saw. I haven't seen the crown guard here. A pushstick as well as a featherboard have to do.

    Saw stop ( USA )

Jacob, I'm making 2 push sticks The first is done, 18" in length, traditional style. I have difficulty thinking of how to use the second. To keep the piece against the fence without causing binding on the blade, it has to be applied ahead of the blade. A featherboard does that well. If it is...

    I need this guy.

I saw this article today in the online New York Times. I hope you can see it, too. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/01/08/world/europe/wales-tidy-mouse-video.html?unlocked_article_code=1.ME0.11my.v7GRHHyl9a03&smid=url-share

Tomorrow I will gift a friend with the coffee table she needs for her home. She plans to work at it, doing fabric arts, but wants it the standard 16" coffee table height. The other dimensions are 36"x23". The top is cherry, from wood I bought when I lived in Pennsylvania in the 1990s. It started...

It is handsome and your treatment of the edges is distinguished. I'll forward this to a friend in Minnesota who makes cutting boards as gifts.

Barbara - If your finger is painful to light touch or "zings" spontaneously, you may have neuropathic pain. Ask your doctor about gabapentin or its derivatives. These may lessen the pain during healing. They are not addictive or habit forming.

That is cringeworthy. He cuts, surfaces, slices, and dices.

These? I can't remember the aesthetic motivation, but I needed something for thin stock.
