    Fire engine bed WIP

I remember using wheeled escapes for a year or two until they all disappeared from service. I believe London were the last to have them on the run. Brilliant ladders but hardly well suited to streets full of parked cars! There's nothing that works as well in terms of stability and strength...

    Relaimed wood in Sussex.

There's a reclamation yard in Polegate, if I remember correctly. They used to have timber, I'm sure. SF

    Help identifying vintage screwdriver

I've got a couple of those somewhere in my little-used tool boxes. I will have to go and find them now, won't I? I reckon they will be covered in oily, dusty sort of stuff, though. Time for a clean up, then! SF

    Carlos Osorio

OK, the bloke is just one silly person among very many. What I find disturbing is a legal system that can come up with that kind of decision and follow it with a stupendously ill-considered award! If that happens here we are doomed for sure! Cheers, SF

Garage Doors using external fire door blanks

Thanks for that Bob. I think someone has been giving me incorrect information about these doors not holding up outside in the weather. I thought that was what they were for!!. I can get them at a discount with any luck but I'm not sure if I can use the support wheel thingies because the drive...

    Another one bites the dust

Sorry to hear that, Sooty. Photography should be a lot less physical for you, I should think, so why not. It's always been one of my hobbies. Best wishes to you, anyway, SF

Garage Doors using external fire door blanks

Bob, It was Howdens' doors I was looking at. Glad to hear their blanks do last. I was proposing to dress them up with lipping and perhaps some applied mouldings to give a decent effect. I was finding it hard to believe that a solid core door could delaminate if properly treated. They are...

Garage Doors using external fire door blanks

I've not tried this but I am wondering if this could be a good way to make a pair of good solid doors for my garage (workshop). I can get 1200 x 2400 external door blanks that can be cut down to any size. This would allow me to lip them and dress the up in any approved manner according to the...

    My first foray into veneering

Lovely work. I'm not sure if I like the knobs but give me time and I will probably love them! Well done. A cracking job. SF

    Fire Doors

A door closer should never slam the door. Unfortunately this is almost always what Perko closers do. This is why I would never accept them unless pushed. A good quality door closer will not take fingers off but it will close a door fully against the stops - slowly and effectively, every time...

    Fire Doors

Duncan, that should be fine. If they need further information you will probably need to point out that to fully conform to the BS you would need to be installing door sets. If they are happy to accept the installation of doors into existing frames then, technically, the whole BS scenario is...

    Fire Doors

Just to keep things in perspective - the only way a fire-resisting door can work is when it is closed...........period! If the door is part of the protection to an escape route I can see no way that there should ever be a reason to remove the closer (or not fit it in the first place) regardless...

    Fire Doors

Talk to Building Control, Duncan, to see what they will accept. The fact is, unless you buy ready-made doors (and frames) as a set that have been accredited as fire resisting then whatever you do will not meet the British Standard. Closers are not required any longer for domestic situations...

Ooh! I feel for you. Wisdom teeth do the daftest things, given their name! All hassle or nothing, it seems. Hope it goes OK with the general. SF
