AEG Belt sander "Made in Japan"

Thanks for all replies . More info added below - I'd read that v. interesting thread but couldn't see where mine fitted in - thanks for adding it. The box seemed a bit Woolworths style , belt size not mentioned etc. I did think maybe fake I assumed different belt size meant different machine...

AEG Belt sander "Made in Japan"

Today I bought, very cheap, an old 4" AEG belt sander - model HBS100. I'm puzzled by the label "Made in Japan" and tried to find out who made it. I'm stumped - found AEG sold to Atlas Copco group 1992, then a chinese group TTI 2004/9 Box !! says nothing. It uses 100 x 560 belts. Any info...

    Dating mahogany(?) drop leaf table

Thanks for all your very interesting replies. I plan on making some "keepsake" boxes - definitely not to be painted ! The leg parts used to embelish/decorate other pieces. I don't have the skills to attempt a decent restoration on anything - when I paint it black it's just whitewashing over...

    Dating mahogany(?) drop leaf table

I hear you. When I first saw the table I just thought - "dingey dark brown" . . . Seller wanted £5 - he wouldn't take £3 - hence cheap and dingey I cut it up , woodworm made it an easy choice. May be of very slight consolation for you to hear that I do "vintage" bits of utility furniture -...

    Dating mahogany(?) drop leaf table

Thanks for all of your comments. I didn't wonder about the table much until I saw the board width. CutOut / burned the wormy frame/leg and ripped the 2 leaves? - a bit late in the day to worry. I have been told it's mahogany , but I don't know anyone with a fraction of the knowledge shown here...

    Dating mahogany(?) drop leaf table

Thanks - having poor colour vision has made me no good at ID'ing wood. Didn't think it was anything special and the short screws didn't look that old at all. I thought they were type of engineering screws ! It was the width of the top board that surprised me - I'd already cut up the leafs .

    Dating mahogany(?) drop leaf table

Hi , I recently bought a dark wood drop-leaf table from a car boot sale for the timber. I was told it was mahogany and it was surprisingly heavy. Cutting the top up today I cut the end off and it seems to be one board ! 19" wide ! The leafs were 21 1/2" wide harder to see if they were one board...

    New company, new career

Hi Molynoox , it's been interesting reading this thread. I've just decided to pull my finger out and try to make a wage from my workshop. Wouldn't you consider making smaller items - just to get doing something ? Because if you don't diversify, there seems a possibility that things will just...

Black and Decker router HD1250 - tightening cutter ??

Hi , just tried changing the cutter in a newly acquired Black and Decker router HD1250 but there seems to me that there is an "extra" nut - the larger but thinner one in the middle. I'm guessing that is a lock nut for after the cutter is tightened and is tightened up to the top nut ? I'd be...

Help ID metal bar tool - possible old railway use ??

" The bulged end retains the tine in a holder, the missing end does the work. " -another very plausible suggestion . The wider retained end may well have become " riveted " over due to the loads from the needle/tine end being driven. Thanks again for all replies . The taped "handle" part most...

Help ID metal bar tool - possible old railway use ??

Andy , I feel you are on the right track - Again . However I'm not finding any online images of such a primitive style of clapper . That said , I couldn't find an image of a fold bar either .

Help ID metal bar tool - possible old railway use ??

Andy , I feel you are on the right track ! The end I ignored may well help out now. Not sawn but it looks broken off/snapped . The dimpled in side isn't that obvious - another pic. I'm in Hull, a city founded by monks to export their sheep a thousand years ago ! There are a few "pinfold"...

Help ID metal bar tool - possible old railway use ??

Sorry fo delay - and Thanks for all of your replies . The surface in pic where it widens doesn't seem really hollowed/concave - more the edges at widest are "riveted" over. However the opp. face does seem noticeably concave - added pic. No signs of any impact at the taped end. The armourer's...

Help ID metal bar tool - possible old railway use ??

Hi ,as title says . I posted this in the metalworking section but have had no replies. Just picked this up but am struggling to ID it, 3kg , 16" long overall , taped handle part is nearly 7" , it doesn't taper. 1" thick where it widens to just over 2 1/2" It's been suggested that it may have...

Bobbin sander 370W induction? vs 450W Noise difference ??

Thanks all - now this makes more sense to me. The triton is 350w I believe but the trade off for quieter operation seems worth it to me. The question is - do I get new induction triton while available or other used / older induction models ?? regards davej.

Bobbin sander 370W induction? vs 450W Noise difference ??

Well that's not what I expected !! But thanks for input. I don't want to upset neighbours and my workshop is 50yds behind the houses, I just wanted to avoid the screech from belt sanders. My new induction motor disc sander is very quiet tho' not used really as still rebuilding the workshop...
