    What does 'clear cuttings' mean?

Thanks John, yes I became aware that there is some conflicting in terms between grading timber and the term used for felling / logging. What I think I have understood correctly is that if a certain grade requires 4" x 7' 'clear cutting' on say an 8ft board, then it means there must be enough...

    What does 'clear cuttings' mean?

In an effort to understand timber grading better, I often see the term 'clear cuttings' referenced in various grading criteria. Can someone explain what this actually means, and what it excludes etc? many thanks :) benjy

Fixings for stud wall to concrete floor and blocks?

thanks bingy. Well the stud wall is cls 38mm thickness ( 89 mm width). Yes, my main problem is how far to drill deep into the block and how far is sufficient. I would do as you mentioned above, use the timber to mark up, then drill only through the block., add plugs etc, return the timber to...

Fixings for stud wall to concrete floor and blocks?

by frame fixings, do you mean the hammer in type fixings with the nylon plug? or any frame fixing including the direct to concrete screws? regarding fischer plugs, i think that would be the best solution for the walls. My wall is CLS 38mm thickness, what size plug and screw would you reccomend...

Fixings for stud wall to concrete floor and blocks?

I am building a partition wall from CLS studs, to separate an office area to the general warehouse area. Floor is concrete and walls are concrete blocks. What fixings would i be best suited for, to attach the stud wall to both the floor and the walls. It does not have to be a lifetime fixing, as...

Quality difference between table saw price bands

Many of my thoughts are echoed exactly by your words regarding older machines. I would love to do it as a 'passion project' but not as the only saw I have that I need it to work :) the ITech 01332 does have the twin slots you mentioned which allows for great jig versatility. As does the laguna...

Quality difference between table saw price bands

Ah the altendorf, thats the dream haha but I think its a tiny bit overkill for someone just starting out really... one day though!

Quality difference between table saw price bands

Thanks for all the replies, and I had a feeling most would suggest buying an older machine and refurbish, based on perusing older threads. I just don't have the confidence / knowledge to that at the moment although down the line it would be something I would love to do for all the reasons...

Quality difference between table saw price bands

I am looking to get a solid table saw for my expanding workshop and for many months have eyeing the Itech 01332 as the contender at £1150 give or take. However I am wondering if there is a huge difference in bouncing up to the next ' bracket' in the 2 / 2.5 K range. For example the Laguna Fusion...

Advice on finishing this shoe rack

Thanks for the advice! I was actually leaning to Danish oil too as it seems to be a good all round option. Love the smell of sapele and the look. It does seem to get a turned up nose in some circles as a 'cheap' or poor mans mahogany but its sure good enough for me

Advice on finishing this shoe rack

Would any basic finish work for these species or is there something i should be watching out for?

Advice on finishing this shoe rack

So I am close to finishing my first actual woodworking project :) This shoerack made of Sapele and Ash: 1. Try to imagine the top shelp affixed to the underside of the top frame (not just resting on top) and ignore the fact that I took a photo of the back, more unsightly side. It also...
