Hmm. Now was this: a) An opportunity for a Mod to air his own partiality. or b) An opportunity to lock the thread before it gets further out of hand? Wanna phone a friend, Noel? God, you're all pathetic. Happy Easter - let me know when someone resurrects this place as a woodworking forum and...

The slope widens - A German Smoother

Heh, my first act was to look for that too. Damn that pesky mark; it haunts us all.

The slope widens - A German Smoother

This would seem as good a place as any to put a link to this German tool mark site (chisel orientated, though it is) which I've been meaning to share for ages. Although Wolfgang's brilliant site would have been my first port of call too (via Google translation, I admit!). I dunno, Jim, have you...

    Wooden spokeshave - how to sharpen/hone ?

Yeah, that's another option I've used in the past. Actually, that way I suppose you could maybe make it a bit easier still (if judging the angle is problematic) by using similar ideas as I used here. On the basis that horizontal is always easier for us poor hopeless human beings to get right...

You're not going mad; there was a post by Jacob - it disappeared whilst I was composing mine.

    bench grinder tool rest

Ooo, no, where's the fun in that? Plus you'll be way ahead of the game when the world grinder shortage kicks in.

OK, I give up... What's 'switch-hitting' in cricket?

Suffer CMJ?! My dear old thing, I'll take CMJ over Boycott any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

    Wooden spokeshave - how to sharpen/hone ?

Like that; like that (as far as I'm aware); and no. The majority of old ones are, but you get the odd patented variety that isn't. Then there are the bevel down variety, which is just another flat blade. Then there are the modern sort that have threaded tangs, which may or may not be removable...

See? Hoping for the best is the way forward. :D Very nice result. I sense possible Slope fodder in this one...

    Woodworking DVD

I've had a look at the first two Paul Sellers DVDs in the full expectation of hating them, but I didn't simply because his enthusiasm and sheer enjoyment of the actual wood was so refreshing. I felt the DVD suffered from quite a few gaps in exactly "how to", but I haven't seen the book and...

Very tidy job, Dav. Guards removed for clarity I 'spect...? ;)

    a few good bargains

Been on the list for a year or so now; no affiliation to Tim that I know of (the owner's called Simon, but I've no experience of the site as a customer and no affiliation here either).

    old wood planes

Just a tip for all really, but with moulding planes etc, it's actually a lot more useful for identification purposes to have a picture of the end, rather than the side. If it's the end with the maker's mark, so much the better - maker and type identification can usually all be achieved in one...

Indeed. I was going to hold off possible solutions until hoping for the best had been proved fruitless. ;)

    old wood planes

Well blood sacrifice is often demanded, in my experience. S'what I do to clean them up, for what it's worth. Caution though; it's another one of those Slippery Slopes. (Gratuitous shot to follow, 'cos we all like da pretty pictures, right?)

    Record block plane 09 1/2

Hmm, looks mainly okay - slightly worried that there's a deep pit right in the middle of the front of the mouth, exactly where you don't want it. Hopefully the camera is lying like a dog. Looking forward to seeing it cleaned up.
