    Database for tools

I use Excel to list my tools in various columns. I found it makes absolutely no difference to whether I buy duplicate tools or not - especially antique tools. For instance I have 11 infill smoothers - most of which I rarely, if ever, use. Yes, I am in need of help but I don't CARE.

Ordering hand tools from EU sources

Joke is that we could ALWAYS have had blue passports - the red ones weren't mandatory. Croatian passports are blue and German passports are a sort of pink. As if it mattered !! All the others are a sort of Burgundy-ish shade. The REAL joke is that the new UK passport is manufactured in...

    First import from the EU

Agreed - worst decision the UK ever made.

    Infill plane???

Very nice -especially after a good cleanup. Aside from the usual well-known brands like Norris, Mathieson, Spiers, Moseley, etc, there were a host who also made infill planes but never bothered to stamp them because, for the most part, they didn't export or send to other parts of the...

    Vaccination

500000 in a day is pretty good. I'm 76 and live in France and was supposed to get a letter from my doctor last week but so far - nada. I can, however, make an appt using the web page but would prefer to wait until my OH is able to do likewise - she's 71. in the meantime I remain indoors as...

    Tier 4

I have rarely read such drivel. You might change your attitude if you were in ICU about to peg it. I am aware that 'flu also kills people but the difference is in the time it takes to develop symptoms and I have so far not heard of the hospitals being overwhelmed with 'flu patients...

    Hand planing issue

Make sure yout blade is razor sharp and set it so it gives paper thin shavings - I ,ean really thin. Prefereably, your oak is straight grained and has no knots - is so, you should be OK. Don't concentrate exclusively on getting full length shavings - that's not necessasry if your shvings are fine.

How to make a moulding plane - historic films available

I watched this film through to the end with great interest and also a lot of sorrow. You are witnesing the end of a trade. There are no more traditional plane makers. Yes, there are those of us, both private and commercial, who carry on making wooden planes, but no longer truly hand made...

    Old Woodworking Tools

I have several old rebate planes - a few of them are dovetailed construction but most are not. Shoulder planes, being wider, are often of dovetailed construction, being easier to make - I can confirm this, having made a couple myself. If it has a name on the nose of NORRIS or SPIERS, then it's...

Is this a Mathieson plane - update

Sadly, very little goes "unnoticed" on ebay , although I have won a few nuggets in joblots.

    Unusual plane, what is it?

My guess is that it is a router. One of the annoying things about Stanley/Record, etc, routers is the narrowness of the iron and sole so if you are smoothing the bottom of a wide recess you either have to fit a temporary base to your router (the No 71 and 71-1/2 have provision for this) which...

Is this a Mathieson plane - update

Andy - I'm inclined to continue to think it is indeed a Mathieson plane given where it was bought and the other planes that came with it. It is in need of some TLC - if it were otherwise (i.e. in perfect nick) I would not be so sure that it was sourced at or near its original home. If you see...

Is this a Mathieson plane - update

Update - I still don't know who made the plane but you may find the following interesting. (For original listing - see a few postings below). Under the frog were two folded up bits of newspaper. One disintegrated completely but I was able to unfold the other. Enter the Internet. The paper...

Is this a Mathieson plane ?

Yes, this was my first thought. All that would be necessary is a 2-3/8" lever cap - I have all the rest. I'll clean it up and try one of my No 5-1/2 caps in it. If it works well, than I'll keep it in it's present configuration with a suitably old lever cap (e.g. without a brand name). If I...

Is this a Mathieson plane ?

P.s. - re the original plane - I do have all the fixing screws.

Is this a Mathieson plane ?

I have Brunners book on Infill planes which deals with Spiers, Norris, Mathieson and Preston. No, there's nothing like this anywhere. I think, Andy, you are right. The sides of the plane are not chamfered as all other panel planes are. This is a casting, not dovetailed and the nose of the...

Is this a Mathieson plane ?

Also occurred to me in a blinding flash that if the frog is original then the iron cannot be, because otherwise there is no way of adjusting the depth of cut. The original iron must have been a straightforward iron, cap iron, lever cap assembly. Thus the Mathieson connection is probably a...

Is this a Mathieson plane ?

That's very interesting. It's just dawned on me that there's no cap iron with this plane nor is there any provision for one on the iron, unless one is supposed to be installed as on the continent - i.e. loose. The only crescent to be found is on the iron itself. Unless there's something...

Is this a Mathieson plane ?

I recently bought a job lot of planes which included one metal "half infill" and four wooden planes. All the wooden planes bar one were by Mathieson. The metal plane is jack size, has no makers mark on it but the blade is unusual and is stamped with the Mathieson mark. I would like to know if...

    Making planes - cautionary tale

Well, lots of good info and advice here. The dust I've been suffering is generated principally by my belt sander . I used my table saw and bandsaw only for a few minutes on this particular job but I think it was the sander that kicked up the most dust. The following day I wore the mask when...
