What trade(s) do I need for drains, effluent and mains

Hi folks Expect this is a daft question. Am sorting out a 50s semi, and have a couple of jobs I don't think I can tackle myself. 1. Kitchen is a single storey flat concrete roofed structure, looking like a lean to on the side of the house, though double skinned and original. The cast iron...

    Small morticer

Hi chaps I have 11 ash doors to make (4 1/2" wide stiles) and time constraints mean that I can't really do these by hand (curses) Am looking at the Axminster AW16BM Bench Morticer. Can it really handle a 5/8" (16mm) chisel, given the low power, or would I need to consider using a narrower...

    Buggered blade beggars tearout

Ha! Lent fave plane out, got it back looking a tad well used. Derusted, degunked, beds restored, just the iron to sort. Blade 'back' had been savaged on an unflat stone and then barber flappy stropped on concrete I think - needing 3/16" grinding back, some serious lapping or heavily cambering...

Down quill and raise your new fangled fountain pen in glee. A dickie bird has just told me the CD catalogue is in the post.

    Edge truing techniques

Following on from the #7 threads, I'd like to learn the various techniques for truing a board edge, so I can make an informed choice as to which to use and when. The methods I am aware of are: 1. Jigged - shooting board bed and track tuned parallel and out of wind with a straight blade, set...

    Any word on Auriou auction?

Hey folks Is there any news on the Auriou auction last Thursday? Cheers Steve

    LN blades pre-ruler tricked?

Have started prepping my replacement replacement 140 (the first was LH though perfect, the second RH but a dog), and find the blade looks like it has already been ruler tricked  :x   Did I just get (un)lcky, or are they now doing this on purpose? Don't remember my LA...

    Jim Kingshott DVDs

Hi folks Have just received the 4 Jim Kingshott DVDs (Bench Planes, Special Planes, Mortice & Tenon and Dovetails) from Tools for Working Wood. A charming gentleman, with a slick yet very relaxed presentation style. In spite of Fox Chapel Publishing's advice to the contrary, these are indeed...

From scary sharp to eyewatering sharp

Damascus is now officially near Ashford, Kent. Having used jigs and scary sharp since dot to achieve a razor sharp edge, I have now been shown the light and will only use a jig for reshaping. (Though of course, this is a shady corner that I expect will ultimately be bathed in the same light)...

    Winding Sticks

Hi folks Was watching Rob Cosman's Rough to Ready and noticed something that looked odd. I thought the point of having registration pins in a pair of sticks was that it doesn't matter if top and bottom edges aren't quite parallel, provided both sticks share a common geometry (which match...

    Wedged through M&Ts

Watched Mr Cosman's M&T DVD last night. Got me thinking. Any rules of thumb for when you'd bore through the bottom end of the kerf-for-the-wedge as a split inhibitor? (Got a little something from Mr Iles too - can report that lapping D2 not a problem) Cheers Steve

    Made a new glue chisel

Started new practice regime at the weekend, MTs and DTs every night straight after work. But I find this evening that I need some new chisels - though I do have a nice new canted glue chisel ( :x ) So now I'm down to the relative merits of Mr Iles's D2 and LN's A2 - sockets don't really...

    Scarf saw-ted (gloat)

Woohoo! The postman delivered 128 new teeth from MikeW this morning: 16" x 4 1/2" .028" blade 9ppi rip cut with a little fleam 1/4" slotted brass back, maple handle. For cutting my instrument neck scarfs. Dashed to the workbench still beslippered as soon as the postman turned away. Fab...

Dog head hammer for saw tensioning?

Hi folks I've got a Livingston rip saw doing a Rolf Harris impression on the back stroke, so presume it needs retensioning. What weight hammer should I be looking for, and as there seems to be a dearth dog heads on the market (which is a PITA even if not a PETA thing) what alternative would...

    18" tablesaw set up

Hey folks Have acquired a new Crownshaw and Chapman(?) table saw, and was wondering how best to set it up. The blade is 18" taper ground, currently 6tpi in serious need of a sharpen (and a work over to straighten a gradual bow,) though the teeth are fairly evenly shaped (less set at the tip...

    Hand Saw Tension

Hi folks Am getting curious about tensioning hand saws (back saws too, but one thing at a time...) I've come across multiple hints that the cutting edge should be tensioned by selective hammering of the blade, but no indication of what pattern (or degree) of thinning (and so periferal tension)...

The Ugliest Plane on the Planet

Nope, surprisingly not a Veritas (but nor does it have the LV air of quality and intelligent design) - definitely one from the primaeval sludge. http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-And-Unique-Violinmaker-s-Purfling-Plane_W0QQitemZ300099981152QQihZ020QQcategoryZ10180QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem...

    Mike's Teeth (Pictures)

Ooo - just received one of MikeW's Kenyon dovetail saws. It cuts like, well, I assume it cuts. I present it to the wood and shortly thereafter find a kerf of the required depth appears. Feels like it just melts through the wood. The closest tool I have for comparison is an LN small crosscut...

    Veneer Press Screw Suppliers

Hi folks Anyone know of a UK (or European) source for press screws? I need half a dozen for some bending forms (9" screws would do, but 12" better,) and I'd rather not burn carbon getting them from the states if pos. Thanks Steve
