    I almost cried today

I drove 60 miles to buy 3 big lumps of elm which the guy said was seasoned 3 years old with no cracks, when I got there he dragged the sections out from behind a shed, bone dry and big cracks in one end sodden wet at the other, all 3 were like that plus two had signs of worm or lava. Such a...

Vertical alignment of headstock and tailstock.

I have a record Coronet Regent lathe that is 10 months old which I haven't used for 5 months, workshop too cold. last week I moved it to a new workshop and spent a lot of time getting the bed level as the concrete floor has a slope. It was level when I finished with the headstock feet being a...

    Suggest a finish

I have some European Walnut which is quite pale and am going to build a small 2 drawer entrance / sofa table. It's the first time I have used this wood and am wondering about what finish to apply. I have the ability to spray (HVLP) or roller and brush. So what would people recommend as a finish...

    Using resin

I would like to try using resin to fill voids before turning, is it really necessary to have a vacuum pot? If it is it's a step to far for me so any advice on doing without would be useful.

A bit of advice explanation please

I have settled on two lathes but really can one justify the price difference, they are the Axminster AT 350 WL and the AT 406 WL the real difference is in power the 406 is double at 1.5Kw which for sure would be useful as my skills develop the max diameter is 2" larger for the 406 and whilst the...

Just to give people an idea of what's available SH in France

I have decided to take up turning as in my previous post so did a little looking on the most popular French SH sales site, there is very little use of e bay and this was a typical sort of offering. https://www.leboncoin.fr/outillage_materiaux_2nd_oeuvre/2140572634.htm

    Looking to do something different

I posted this in the general forum and was rightly advised to repost here: Looking for something different to do and have an idea I might like to take up turning so a couple of questions. It is unlikely that I can get any instruction so is it realistically feasible to teach ones self ? If so...

    Turning advice

Looking for something different to do and have an idea I might like to take up turning so a couple of questions. It is unlikely that I can get any instruction so is it realistically feasible to teach ones self ? If so what sort of exercises might be useful to understand the tools and equipment...

Axminster and the UKJ 10mm base router table plate and universal adapter

I decided to change the router in my UKJ router table which has the universal adapter plate. I wanted to fit the Triton TR 0001 for the advantage of being able to change the bit above the table. On checking (before I purchased the Triton router) the universal adapter plate was confirmed as...

    Filling a hairline crack

I have a hairline crack that has developed post machining and have thought about filling it with powdered wood from sanding and superglue. Never done it before but heard about it. Does it work? Any tips or suggestions.

    3MPPS system

After several days of spraying and the inevitable cleaning I thought about looking at the 3M PPS system but what a shock nearly £250 for the consumables the liners when you then put the cup, lid and adapter for the gun you are looking at £500. I think I will give it a miss.

    Bosch router woes

I have a Bosch GOF 1600 which just stopped working in the router table so I took it out and put it into its plunge base and it still wouldn't work. Thinking it might be brushes or dust I took it apart reset the brushes and put it back together again and yes it works but the speed adjustment has...

    Making a 70° or 130° degree cut

I need to put a 70° cut on the edge of a 1.7M long 30mm Birch ply and as my table saw is limited to 50° I am struggling to think how to do it safely. It does need to be a uniform and flat edge and I am not relishing the idea of trying to do it with a plane. Any suggestions.

    Cabinet door sizing

I have to build a run of 3 cabinets each with 2 doors and book shelving above. The cabinets are 1000mm wide by 85mm high with two doors simple shaker style, single panel so what would be good aesthetically pleasing dimensions for the stiles and rails?

In my move to France the thin 23mm open ended spanner has gone missing anyone know where I can buy one short of buying a set off e bay I just need a cheap pressed steel one to fit the bush between blade and the arbour nut, it needs to be about 2mm thick. I have tried the manufacturer but no...

    Centring a router bit

I tend to cut most of my mortices with the router but from time to time fail to centre the bit precisely which if the piece with the tenon is supposed to be flush with the piece with the mortice is a problem as the result is a slight step at the shoulder and join. Does anyone know where a...
