What's the best way to make mitred joins for keepsake box?

As others have said unless the miter saw is a good one and well set up it will not be accurate enough. Have a trial run with some pine as it will be a good exercise in setting up the saw and learning about miter joints. I use the tablesaw like recipio says but with a sled. Shooting board is the...

    Workbench Project

Its a very nice looking bench. On moxons while they are great to have I would not replace the front vice with one. A portable one to sit on the bench top is a better way to go. I find the bit I like best is that it raises the work to a very comfortable height where you dont have to bend over...

    Hilka smoothing plane info wanted

Never heard of them before but it looks quite good. Give it a try. Still got wooden handles so the 60tes does look about right. Looks a whole lot better made than their latest offering. Regards John

    Partially or Fully Threaded Screw?

First welcome to the forum. I would not trust a ladder that is just screwed together. Normally the rungs are round and fit into holes in the side of the rails. A more basic ladder can have rectangular rungs that fit in notches on the front of the rails then screwed. The screws just hold the...

    Organisation and workflow

I think we fall into the trap of feeling like we are failing if its not up there with the BS image fed us by modern media. All those videos of perfect workshops clean as operating rooms. Those buzwords like focused, driven, and the like remind me of those horrible management...

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Done a few non woodwork things on my bench but I would draw the line at that. Be too much of a clean up required afterwards. Don't know why the 3 little piggies were so worried about the big bad wolf. Regards John

    Help and Advice

I have lately been thinking what will happen to my tools when I shuffle off. For my part I would like them to go to people who will make use of them and hopefully get joy from some of them like I have had. The kids are not really into woodwork but I hope they keep a piece or two just as...

    Chisel Buying Advice

I worked with a guy who had been involved in ship salvage and he told me that the steel from the German fleet skuttled in Scapa Flow was in high demand as it was sunk pre atomic time. To make scientific measuring equipment mostly as it had no background trace of radiation. I could see the logic...

    Machinery wheels? Casters

I have tried 4 braked and swivel and the 2 fixed/unbraked with 2 swivel braked and also find the 4 braked swivel the best to move around. (bit of a mouthful that sentence) Anything that sits on the wheels while working is never as stable as feet on the floor and I find thicknessing big heavy...

    Old workbench with unusual feature

Looks like a pretty standard joiners bench. Nicholson style with deep aprons and the holes on blue side is where a big wood screw vice would have been. My grandad's joiners shop had a few similar to that but without all the built in storage and not so big either. As the rule goes a bench is long...

TOOL STORAGE CABINETS & RACKS... WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE NOT DONE BUYING???

When I set up my shed 20 years ago I went with pegboard for the same reason. Time however has shown me some if it's weak points. Some of the holes get enlarged and those wire clip thingies are not always just what you want for some items. I am bit by bit overlaying it with french cleats. Mind...

Safely cutting lap joins on table saw

There are quite a few ways to do it. Three here are an example and also show a tablesaw sled and a tenon jig. 3 Ways To Cut Half Lap Joints - YouTube As you are new to woodwork it would be good practice for you to do at least a couple of them the hand tool way. Doing them on the tablesaw with...

    Chisel Buying Advice

Old chisels are a very cost effective way way to get top quality chisels for not not much outlay. Sometimes a bit of work derusting and forming a new primary bevel thats good practice for keeping them sharp. Have to replace really beat up handles too. All those on the wall were got for very low...

TOOL STORAGE CABINETS & RACKS... WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE NOT DONE BUYING???

Got the same problem. It's why I have avoided tool chests, those cabinets where everything has its custom made place and shadow boards. Nice and ordered as they look soon as another tool arrives it upends the system. If you can say thats the set of tools that will do me for life then go ahead...

    Scheppach TS2500 vs Scheppach TS4000

I agree with Sideways. 2kw is plenty and with the right blade will easily do what you want. My old saw is only 1500w and has no bother cutting 75mm hardwood. Regards John

    Surform with a difference

I still have the one I bought back in about 1975. Really can't remember when I last used it however. I have noticed that some hardware places still stock blades but I resisted the temptation. It is in the museum corner of the shed having been usurped by the shinto rasp. Regards John

    Record Block Plane Saved.

50p would have to be the tool bargain of the year. I see Amazon has that one at $108 here in Australia. It is a fairly new model so wont be up there with old records but still a bargain. If you had bought a brand new one, likely you would still had to lap the sole. Regards John
