    Somerset Ash

Yes, he has cut a lot this thin which suits me for what I want but it’s all dead straight and slowly dried. I am waiting for him to get to the 2“ ones which are underneath because it’s all being moved next week.

    Somerset Ash

Thanks Brian, I wasn’t aware of Pughs. I was thinking of about £50 each which doesn’t seem to far from the mark. John

    Somerset Ash

Hi all, I could do with a bit of help with pricing. I have been given the opportunity to buy any amount of these locally grown Ash planks. I made the headboard from the same wood last year and I fell in love with it. These planks are just over 1” thick, about 14ft long (probably 11ft useable...

In your opinion what's the better P/T - the iTech or Axminster?

Well, for what it’s worth I have a Axminster AP310SPT which I bought secondhand when it was a year old. For me, the spiral cutter head has been fantastic. I reclaim a lot of the wood I use and this machine has undoubtedly been abused by me but has come out on top. You will hear criticism of...

    Screwfix worktop jig black pegs

Bingy Man, that’s a great idea. No idea why I didn’t think of it! EBay search commencing. I will try Screwfix too but I doubt they sell the pegs separately. Thanks again. John

    Screwfix worktop jig black pegs

Good morning all. This is a very long shot but worth a try. I am fitting a kitchen for my daughter. I borrowed the above worktop jig from my brother in law. Everything went brilliantly and then, at the end, disaster! I was packing it up and dropped one of the black plastic pegs. Unbelievably it...

    Home Lift

Richard, this is a vexed question for many. We all have different backgrounds and what would be commonplace and acceptable for some would have others screaming. Many of us amateurs have capabilities far greater than many, so called experts. I had an eicr done on my electrics by a qualified...

    Stained glass panels

Thank you very much for this. John i have been thinking of doing something like that. Maybe not triple glazed but behind glass. The window I am going to replace is below. I am thinking that I might somehow re use the glass as an outer shield. It’s a single glazed upvc unit that I reclaimed when...

    Stained glass panels

Just as a supplementary question, what is the best way to clean the remnants of old putty from the lead which is generally in good mechanical condition? thanks john

    Stained glass panels

Ok, I have done the first one and it was really successful. I think, with resistance I could have hacked the putty out but the panels are deeply recessed and I don’t think there is any way I would have got them out without destroying the frame. As it happens, there is a lot of woodworm in the...

    Stained glass panels

Jacob, you were quite right. The remaining putty just snaps off see update below

    Stained glass panels

Thanks for the replies. I think that trying to chip the putty away is higher risk than cutting the frame off because the putty is so hard and because the glass is not smooth and has the lead ridges, it won’t be easy to get a blade under it. I am going to try the tracksaw, being mindful of the...

    Stained glass panels

Hi all, I have been given 8 of these stained glass panels, taken from a bay window in a Victorian house. I have a plan to build a window incorporating the stained glass panels but not the frames. So, the question is how to remove the panels from the frames Without damaging them. This one...

    Ironwood?

Thank you all for your help. I think on balance that this is Greenheart. now to find a use for it! john

    Ironwood?

I absolutely agree. I think it was called ironwood because it is dense and heavy and no one knew what the hell it was. I also agree on it’s destiny. I don’t really need all of this. I might use some for a box or two. Chopping boards maybe? John

    Ironwood?

Ok, more pics of the wood in question. Some end grain and some closer from the side. My track saw had no problem cutting a chunk off the end to expose clean grain. No idea what the curved cavity is! Sorry about the photography, not my strong suit…like identifying wood! john

    Ironwood?

Thanks Phil, it certainly looks like that wood. There is an awful lot of knife handles in this bit! john
