    Tilgear any good?

I've been looking through a tilgear catalogue and noticed they sell a 311 plane labelled as "Brook" and a copy of the 52e vice also sold as Brook. They're considerably cheaper than paying for a Clifton 311 or Irwin 52e. Would it be fair enough to assume they're not great quality?

Countersunk bolt for whitehill block problem

Good evening. I've purchased a block for my spindle moulder that has a recess in the top to allow workpieces to pass over the block. I bought the block from axminster and it's arrived in a Whitehill box. The block includes a suitable countersunk washer, but no bolt to attach the block to my...

    Tormek versus Viceroy sharpedge?

I'm considering buying something for sharpening chisels and plane blades. A new T8 Seems to be only a little more expensive than I can find a second hand sharpedge locally. Is one machine much superior to the other? The price difference isn't much and I'd go for whichever is the better...

    Water wheel design help?

I intend to make a water wheel to put in a small stream near my house. By my own measurement the stream carries about 1.6 litres per second as of yesterday, but it hasn't rained with me in nearly two weeks. I intend to make the wheel from air dried Irish elm, and had planned on a 'backshot'...

    Euro cutters by Biven Machinery

Good day. I've noticed that Biven Machinery seem to be selling 40mm euro cutters and limiters much cheaper than anyone else. http://bivenmachinerysales.co.uk/index. ... uct_id=582 Is there any reason they'd be practically half price? Is there lower quality metal involved? Thanks in advance.

    Record power Sm100 moulder?

Good day gentleman. Does anyone happen to have experience of Record power's sm100 spindle moulder? I'm a hobby user, it would certainly not be used daily. I'd intend to use it to cut something similar to kitchen cornice mouldings. I don't want to spend the money and end up with an underpowered...

    A shoulder plane query

Hi all, I'm aware that the blade on a shoulder plane is routinely wider than the body, but I'm at a loss as to why. Can anyone enlighten me as to the possible advantage of a wider blade? I'm quite tempted to grind my own blade down to the same size as the body of the plane. Any advice is...

    Multico 'm' Morticer starter problems

I turned on my Multico 'M' morticer the other day, cut a small mortice in redwood, and left it running whilst I went to try fit the tenon. I noticed a burning smell and realised that smoke was coming from the morticer. The smoke was coming from a cylinder shaped fitting on the bottom of the...

    Luban block planes at Rutlands

I've seen these on offer at Rutlands, http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+qiangsheng ... +DK1335SET . I'd been considering buying a shoulder plane recently, and had pretty much decided to watch for an old Record or Stanley. Would this rebate plane be suitable for cleaning up shoulders? And ',m also...

    Mitre saw dust extractor?

Having read several threads on here, I'm still confused in regards to dust extraction. I'm a site joiner and do a lot of work with mdf. The amount to dust in the room after a days second fixing is frankly worrying. Most of the dust is produced by a Makita ls1013. I was wondering if anyone could...

    Bandsaw blade thickness

Hey all This is my first post, although I've been following the forum for a while. Long story short, is a thicker blade (0.6mm) better for ripping? As a reader of the forum I see a lot of recommendations for Tuff saw blades. I have a record bs350 for which I've bought several tuff blades. I've...
