    Pieces from the shed

I made myself a jig for sharpening my bowl gouge recently and I have been able to almost get the perfect grind for me. Here is my first proper bowl, using just the 3/8" gouge. Mimosa blank from Rob and is approx 8.1/4" X 3", sanded to 600 and finished with wax22. C+Cs welcome!

    Chestnut - easy find solution!

Hi all, I thought I'd already posted this, but after a search it seems I haven't. I work at a fencing company (no I'm not here to sell stuff!) which sells the rustic 2 or 3 rail chestnut fencing you often see along fields or roadsides (at least you do in Sussex!). If you live near a fencing...

    My first live edged bowl

I thought I would share with you my first live edged bowl. Recently I made a jig for my bowl gouge and this is the first piece I have produced using almost extensively just that tool. Not sure what wood - could be cherry, but it was finished down to 600 and finished with 3 or 4 coats of Danish...

    Make your own Jigs!

Hi all, today I've been playing with some tools I haven't used for some time and decided to upgrade my bowl gouge sharpening jig from wood to metal. I bought a couple of square tubes that fit inside each other just for this purpose - it will end up similar to other jigs I've seen on auction...

    Making ammo!

One down, 11 more to go! I was asked if I could make some 60mm replica mortar shells for a WW2 re-enactment society. Made out of treated Spruce, sanded to 120 and sealed with sanding sealer ready for the society to paint and put the flights on.

Hi guys, I am a great fan of Youtube. I have learnt to do so many things, from fixing cars, welding....and most importantly, wood turning! Obviously, you take the good and with a little research, leave the bad behind. I follow some fantastic people, in fact I subscribe to our very own Dalboy...

    Advice needed on grinder wheel

Hi all, I'm a bit reluctant to ask basic questions like this but even after looking into it - I feel I need reassurance before I spend out! I have made my own jigs for my grinder for sharpening my chisels and can do all of them now including the 'Ellsworth' grind. My problem is I don't have...

    Chainsaw Tikki head

Hi all, just wanted to show the Tikki head I carved out of a Eucalyptus tree that fell during a storm years ago. It was my first and only attempt at chainsaw carving, done after using a chainsaw for the first time - so approx 3 hours use. It looked pretty meh when I first did it - but now I...

    Maker's mark registration?

Hi all, I did a search on the forum but couldn't find anything on this subject. I use the same marking on my items to show they are mine. Is there a way of registering the mark as mine to safeguard the items I make?

My first finial piece - suggested by Rob

Recently I bought a CL4 off Rob. This is the first piece I made with it - apart from marks on the bottom where I should have spent more time getting rid of tool marks I'm very happy with it. The transitions inside are pleasing when felt. It is about 4.5" tall including the finial. While we were...

My old Sealey SM42 vs my new CL4 - Review

I recently upgraded from a Sealey SM42 to a Record CL4 on Good Friday after Rob rather graciously gave me an offer I could not refuse. Grab yourself a cup of tea and let's get started! The Sealey SM42 Is a great little machine that cost me £50 including all accessories and a set of cheap...

    Goodbye my beloved SM42!

This good Friday is definitely going to be a good Friday for me - I'm going to Rob's to pick up his CL4 which I'm buying! WOOHOO!!!!! This will eliminate any excuses I may be able to presently blame my old Sealey for, and means that I will have a decent, reliable lathe for years to come...

    Power Flex gel super glue

I bought some of this - you can be extremely precise with your glue - not bad stuff in my opinion for various sticky job as it claims to be slightly flexible after it sets. Anyone else tried it? :D

    Mother's day

I made this yesterday for Mother's day out of some Ash I received recently in a bag of off cuts from a joinery firm next door to where I work. It's supposed to be egg like - it being near-ish to Easter and to symbolise birth etc. EDIT - It's about 4" high.

    Collecting wood - just lucky?

Hi guys, I was just wondering where you get your wood from? I bought what I thought was a green grocers apple box of oak offcuts for silly money from one of our suppliers at work - turned out to be a meter cube crate! Some bloke who came in to buy a few fence panels who works next door...

Advice needed - beech bowl finishing

Hi guys, I'm having a go at my first proper bowl in a beautiful piece of steamed beech, using my newly ground bowl gouge (thanks Bob!). The gouge is being kept sharp, my cuts are slicing, i'm getting really fine shavings but I can't seem to get rid of some areas of end grain 'roughage'. I...

    Valentines Day gift

I thought I would share this I made for my wife for Valentines day. It's a little ring box with hidden compartment. Walnut with an oak middle bit. (I'd appreciate knowing what to call that bit!) *EDIT* It's about 2"x3.1/2" I learnt how to use jam chucks this weekend. I had 3 separate...
