Getting paid to work on your own home

I’m no expert but that doesn’t sound right to me. If you can do that - and I would love it if you could - then my wife owes me a fortune.

Wall panelling - rail/stile cutting profile

Excellent advice above. He always gives spot on advice that guy. When I quote for panelling I always give both options to the customer when I visit and sometimes even give them two prices; one for solid panels made in the joinery and one for faux panels made on site with a ply backer board...

P/T machines. Is bigger always better ?

I have a large workshop so don’t really have to move things around so I have heavy cast machines. I personally have always liked to have a separate jointer and thicknesser. I like this better in terms of workflow but I am sure those with a combined PT think nothing of quickly converting their...

    Stained glass panels

I‘d just do it the same as you would if you were replacing a pane while the window was still in a building. Carefully remove the old putty with a sharp chisel and maybe run a stanley knife around the perimeter of the glass from both sides when this is done to break any seal. Beware you may...

What is the name for this kind of door stopper?

Never seen one exactly like that with the rubber bung and the tube but that type of stop is called a ‘cushion doorstop‘. Well they are in NZ where I’m from and I’d be surprised if it was different here. Could also put ’wall-mounted’ and/or ‘projection‘ in your searching.

Best way to machine off one side of a large wood beam, in situ?

Chisel then buzzer then beltsander would be faster. Maybe paint rot hardener on the bad bits first too.

Post a photo of the last thing you made

great box. the book matching reminds me of the Blake painting of the dragon and the woman wearing the sun. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Great_Red_Dragon_paintings

Doug, SNAP. we were doing exactly the same work today you and me. Like you I hardly ever see the finished article especially on paint quality work like this as I don’t provide that service. I sometimes ask the painters if I know them or customers to send me a picture when things are finished...

    Past projects.

Nice work. I made 4 very similar outdoor benches for a customer this time last year in oak. I wish I had thought to make an @RSE-shaped curve in the seat like you did. I think it is a very nice touch that probably makes them more comfortable, facilitates water run-off and definitely makes them...

    Cabinet Maker'sRasps

Hi, I am sure someone will come along with better advice than the following but I will get you started. Disclaimer; I don’t really do too much furniture making as I find it really difficult to make money out of it compared to general joinery, built-in cabinetry and heritage and general...

View That Greets Me By My Workshop

Forgot the wedding florist and the old guy who fixed household appliances.

View That Greets Me By My Workshop

Pretty envious of all your great views. The view outside my shop is the sets of large double doors to three smaller workshops in an old asbestos clad 1920s industrial park. But my view is ever changing and I don’t mean with the seasons like yours are. In the last 7 years alone I have had views...

Aren’t you worried that everyone completely opposes your suggestion and you won’t ever know because we are all STFU?

    king Size Mattress price

I have done manual labour all my adult life and had multiple operations on my back and shoulders. Just about everything in our house is either second hand or made by me. About 15 years ago my wife convinced me to buy a new expensive mattress to help with my sleeping. I considered it absolute...

Post a photo of the last thing you made

Not so much what we were making - some el cheapo bookcases for a new second hand bookshop opening in the village - but who I was working with this weekend. My best mate and 21 year old son who spent much of the last few years in NZ where he was backpacking when covid came and stayed to wait it...

    Plane Knowledge Required

I have an old Stanley No 3 that I stole off my Dad in the 1980s when I was an apprentice. It never lets me down. This and my block plane used to be the only planes that travel with me out of the workshop when I go to fit items that I have made in customer’s properties. However, about 12 years...

How long do disposable thickness planers last in hardwood

I feel guilty sometimes when potential customers request reclaimed timber or even bring some down to the workshop to request furniture/joinery items be made from them. I have been talked into it a few times - one was a bar countertop in a British Legion and similar for kitchen and bathroom units...

Well they are guys like the people you meet here. I met them all during nearly 40 years of working in workshops and building sites.

Best way to fix a pine bed-rail with a split dowel socket at one end?

Hi Jed. Bingy has given excellent advice to you. His glue recommendation is spot on too. This type of glue will make a strong bond if you don’t put any weight on it until it is fully dried out. For this to work though it is very important to ensure that the split is forced back exactly into...

Can you dream up a use for.....

I have met loads of guys over the years who had tattooing done using an electric toothbrush driven tattoo gun when they were inside.
