    Flush vice or not?

I had the same conversation here when I built my bench a while back. I was persuaded by the good folks on here to go with a flush fit. I can honestly say, that was the correct decision, as it’s so easy to hold long workpieces etc. I also fitted the rear liner by using machine screws screwed into...

    Router bits

I have used this with great results in a sled. I used the 50mm version and had an effortless clean cut in yew. The cut always feels controlled - great for tenoning and rebating too. One of my most used bits...

    Dowelmax UK

Can you not get it shipped from the states? Both the metric and imperial versions are available with international shipping and priced in GBP. On sale at the moment too, which might help mitigate the shipping cost. https://www.dowelmax.com/product/classic-10mm-dowel-jig-system/ Simon

    Finishing burr walnut panels

I could do, but I get precious little time in the workshop as it is. I don’t use wax finishes very often, so spending a tenner on a tin of Alfie Shine isn’t too bad and would probably last me a good while. Might well try some Polyx - as I’ve got some on the shelf - and see how that looks...

    Finishing burr walnut panels

Thanks for that interesting suggestion. The Peacock oil seems a little spendy, but I would guess a little would go a long way. Have heard many good things about Alfie Shine so maybe I’ll look into this combination. Thanks Simon

    Finishing burr walnut panels

Hi, I've just had my first attempt at hammer veneering a couple of panels -bookmatched burr walnut over plywood. I'm now trying to decide how to finish them. I'd obviously like to pop the grain as much as possible – which would suggest an oil finish – but I feel i would be better using a...

Insulating the Garage Door for cheap (ish)

Hi, I've insulated my doors with bubble insulation. As Mike says, it needs an air gap around it. I made a simple frame, allowing for about an inch gap either side. I then skinned the frame with hardboard both sides to keep the weight down (I'd use 1/2 in ply or OSB if I did it again). The...

    Table saw recommendation

I have an Axminster AT254SB which is 2.2kw so 3hp or thereabouts. Officially it needs a 16 amp supply. I’ve removed the 16a plug and run from a 13 amp plug with no bother, it’s never thrown the trip once in the few years I’ve had it. I do make sure it’s up to speed before starting the dust...

What method/jigs are people using to set up planer knives

+1. Same jigs, same planer, same results. Just make sure you get them set perfectly first time you use them and they’re reasonably fool-proof. Much less of a chore than the stick and pencil method. I find I now change my blades when needed rather than put it off. Simon

    Folding boxwood rules... when?

Surprisingly, for Festool, it’s quite reasonably priced! https://www.ffx.co.uk/tools/product/Festool-201464-4014549263099-Wooden-Folding-Rule-2M

    General plywood advice

Don’t know about the Makita rail, but it runs very happily on Festool track. Not a good idea to swap from one make to another though, as you have to adjust the friction guide thingies, so best to make your choice and stick to it. I prefer the Festool rail myself, although sometimes miss the...

Gory pic alert - When you use a sash cramp at Head height...

Hi John, Yes the clamp was in use, clamping up the base frame of my new workbench. Certainly a lesson learned the hard way! Ironically it was the safety glasses that cut into the side of my head - but possible saved me from worse...
