Bought my first lathe yesterday 😁

When I started turning I was told by an old hand at it that, “if you want to make a small fortune from woodturning then you must start with a large fortune” But what price can you put on the addiction and enjoyment? Dave

    Steb centres

If you want a steb centre ‘equivalent’ as a drive from the headstock then Chronos is the place to go to, £14.36 including delivery. Dave

    Woodturning Lathe Speed “Wandering”

I have the same issue of speed wandering on occasions with my Statesman 240. It is generally caused by the ingress of sawdust into the speed control box (no idea how it gets in there as I have sealed it round with duct tape). Just undo the box and give it a blow or gentle brush out - with the...

    Sticky soft grip covering

    Axminster "Steb" Centres

If you don’t have a hollow headstock then Axminster do a morse taper insert for holding in a chuck. I have been using this for some years now with the Chronos version of the step centre without any problems. I also have an original Steb Centre designed to be held in the chuck but much prefer...

Alex, best place I know for a wide selection of Reisser screws is Issac Lord in High Wycombe (not a million miles from you). Dave

    Faceplate for axminster m900

Alex, I can let you have a few 5mm x 60mm Reisser screws if you need them, no point in buying a box of 200 if you only need a dozen. dave

    Hollowing tools

I use the Rolly Munro articulated hollowing tool and it works well, even more so when I had the tool post support made which stops the tool from wandering and cuts down on vibration at depth. Have had mine for a few years now and the only price I can find is €309 from Steinert in Germany. Dave

    Pricing advice

I was told some years ago when I first started turning that “in order to make a small fortune from woodturning, you must start with a large fortune”. It didn’t stop me and some 20 years on I am no richer (financially) but in satisfaction and joy from fellow addicts I am quids in! Dave

    Ring tool

The late Mark Baker showed me how to use it on one of the woodturning cruises, very interesting but I am with recipio and scooby on this. NOT FOR ME! Have one for sale if I could find it. Dave

    Strengthening spongy wood

Try Drechsler woodhardener, best I’ve ever used on splayed timber, it does not colour the wood at all. Not sure where you can get it from now the Toolpost has closed. Dave

    SIP 01938...Thoughts??

It looks like a variation on the old Axminster Perform CCL, not a bad lathe (my CCL is still going strong after 20 years) one drawback with the SIP version is the spindle thread size of 3/4“ x 16 tpi. Most lathes are now M33 x 3.5 pitch so that might limit chuck choice, also, the headstock and...

    Should you speak the truth?

I found the best way to ensure people in the supermarket keep their distance is to wear my Hannibal Lecter face mask!

    Top tip

The best thing is Germolene liquid skin, is antiseptic, seals cuts instantly but stings like hell for a few seconds! Dave

    head stock adapter

Buzzby, someone who may be able to help is Dave Buckland at Solstrand Industries on the Sands Industrial Estate but I can’t promise anything. Tell him Dave Brookes said he may be kind enough to assist, if he doesn’t remember me (it’s been six years since I have spoken to him) remind him that I...
