    Insulation and cladding

Thanks for the input so far. Briefly, as on mobile at the moment: Moisture management is dealt with - full analysis complete, no risk of interstitial condensation given the rest of the buildup of the wall. Additional ventilation/cavities etc. not needed. Insulation thickness is actually less...

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Just a brief note as I'm on mobile to say thanks all for the continued input! I was away for a few days hence not keeping up with the thread, but will look it all over, digest, and act when I have time! Definitely many, many ways to skin this particular cat though

Router cutters - choosing flute # and spirals

Simple question, but how would I choose the number of flutes on a cutter? When would I want more or fewer? Why would I use a straight cutter when spirals are available? Cost alone?

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Any rules of thumb relating cut depth, cut width, router power, and number of passes?

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Good to know, will look into collets. Battery router - makes sense, though I confess I concluded that for any tool I'm tied to a dust extractor, I might as well also be tied to a power cable. You finally pushed me to look up dado/groove/trench; I had no idea there were different names for with...

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Given I have a 7ft long workbench, a variation of this might well be the way I go. Any reason to hang the router underneath rather than mount overhead, bridging between the two batten-fences (whether directly mounted or on a plywood scrap, depending on dimensions etc etc)?

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

It definitely doesn't...but I-joist is a more recognisable shape/format than if I said I-column, which is closer to how it will be employed. Probably "vertical I-shaped spacer" is most accurate (See Insulation and Cladding thread)

    Insulation and cladding

So I've landed myself the job of insulating the sides of our house. Thanks to a wide variety of factors, there is no option to pay someone to do it. XPS will be in the ground and rise 300mm up the walls. From there to the underside of the eaves is approx 5m. Eaves overhang 300mm plus gutters...

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

No space for a spindle, nor the cash Surely better to ask questions and canvas opinions rather than blunder on blindly and probably more dangerously? Joiners shop is on the radar now, I'll start looking

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Workshop?! What's one of those. I literally don't have a shed ATM, so everything is either in the cellar, under tarpaulins, or in a rickety shack, itself covered in a tarpaulin. Short of not having tarpaulin at all, it's about as far from ideal as possible. Will take the double fence and two...

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Got a source? I could only find trade only suppliers Looks don't matter, these will be completely hidden. Will make a different thread, to give more details

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

I definitely do not have such a long shiny thing, and my wallet shudders at how much I'd have to fork out to make one! Will look at what the fence situation is for the big router. Would the little router be up to it do you think?

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

Chainsaw it is then! Perhaps not... 1/2" and an improvised table sounds more and more like the option that is most readily achievable

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

They're 5m long, trench/groove/dado/slot (what is the difference?!) Is on the centreline of the 65mm fave

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

You had me puzzled there for a minute, until I re-read my post and realised I hadn't actually been clear that the dado runs down the centreline of the timber on the wide (75mm) face. Main post edited for clarity.... I guess that rules out bearing guided cutters and puts me in the realm of a...

    11mm dado over 5m. 40 times.

In the not too distant future I will need to cut a 10.5/11mm wide dado to a depth of approx 15mm along the length of a 47 x75mm piece of timber, on 40ish pieces of timber. Edit: sticks are 5m long, dado/groove is on the centreline of the 75mm face, and is to house a 200mm wide strip of 11mm...

    Router bits starting out

Thanks! Those are a goldmine. I'd stumbled across the router table series in the past, but hadn't twigged to the breadth of coverage

    Router bits starting out

@TRITON and @Spectric thanks. I guess the question re avoiding kits is - how do I choose which cutters to start with? To completely lay bear my ignorance, how would I choose, say, four straight cutters? It seems to me there are a lot of variables - shank, cutting length, diameter, straight Vs...

    Router bits starting out

Thanks, will be sure to do so.

    Router bits starting out

Thanks all - looks like it's a set, and Trend at that. Will start with the 1/4" and add either specialty cutters or the 1/2" set as needed
