    Thats not a knife.

This is a knife (with apologies to mr, hogan). Done as much as I can with the blade. Used ubelievable amounts of sandpaper and solvol and its still not mirror finish. The blade is 12 3/4" long and 2 1/2" deep. It weighs in at over a kilo (2 1/2 lbs). The cross guard is solid brass hollowed...

    repairing a disc cutter

My makita disc cutter (angle grinder, whatever) has been tripping out the mcb for a while now, but as I usually use it at the end of a 30 metre extension, Its been nothing more than a nuisance. Yesterday though it tripped three times on startup, and when I moved it into the woprkshop to remove...

    Scary moment

With this heat it had to come. I've just called the fire brigade for the first time in my life. Working in the open workshop I thought I heard water falling, looked outside and it was a grass fire. Only 300 metres from my house. Thankfully, the wind was blowing the other way from me and no...

    No school today

I was talking last week about too hot be in the workshop at 38c Hah! Today the official high temp for Cyprus was 47c, with more to come. School reopening has been put back a week because almost none of the classrooms have A/C. I'm finally getting value from the pool. This was the shaded porch...

    No work today

Summer is going out with a bang. Too hot even in the shade to do anything. I got my digital test thermometer out of its drawer and it showed 39c, inside the drawer in the shade. Took it out side and laid the probe on the stamped concrete and got 52.5c. I now have to put sandals on to walk to...

    step two

I covered the steel with masking tape. Drew out the pattern freehand. Transferred the tape to a piece of scrap wood and cut it on the bandsaw. Could not decide about the drop on the blade so made one without. Open to votes on either shape (just dont expect me to take notice of them)

The first step of a long journey...

...to becoming a master bladesmith.  My half metre piece of 8670 steel has arrived. Along with a lump of brass for cross guard and pommel. Cant get either on the island. But family are here now so I wont be able to do anything till september, except draw some shapes on it.

    A WIP, not.

I have again failed miserably at recording the progress of my latest project. Again, because I screwed up the measurements not once but twice and have modified each and every bit to make it work. Apologies to any who might have been interested in a step by step. The memsahb was given a set of 6...

    Bush & Chipper

No, this isnt an adults only thread. I wanted to cut a piece of glass and dug out my fathers glass cutter. Its supposed to be a diamond but it didnt cut, so I examined it closely (more closely than I have in the last 60 years) to see if it could be resharpened only to discover thats who made it...

    Beirut bang

Have you seen the news about the enormous explosions in Beirut? We heard all three of them while sitting in the garden. We thought it was a local quarry which often uses explosives, until the news flashes started coming in. Looked up the straight line distance between us and Beirut, Its a 160...

    computer hissy fit

Help please. This morning my vista laptop will not remember passwords or logins. NONE of them. Even logging in and ticking all the remember passwords boxes, all I have to do is shut the internet and then when I reopen they are all gone again. (hammer)

    cutting metal with a bandsaw?

I'm told I need a blade speed around 70 metres per minute to cut annealed steel. My axminster 350N travels at ten times that speed. Is there a way of swapping pulleys to slow it down that much?

    more wildlife

Just to make a change from a 2 metre black snake, I was sitting reading the other day and felt that "tickling" sensation of something walking across me. If its a spider, its death by extreme prejudice, but turned out it was the only insect I can abide. We have a 4" female preying mantis...

    Memory man

No, not Lesley Walsh, but close; We're selling odds and ends. A couple arrive to buy a chest of drawers. he says to me "we've met before". Not in my world mate. "Yes we have, you came into my car showrooms". Long wait for my brain to turn over..... Yes, youre right, I did. I looked at a car...

    The saga of Bobs conk'

It's well known I have scant regard for "properly qualified" doctors. I have a tale to tell the why of. In 1970, on a drunken night out, I argued with a lamppost and lost. When I sobered up, I went to my family doctor, face all bruised, "cant breave fru by dose". Quack doctor number one gave...

    invasion of the power tools

Just lately, the island has been swamped with new name brand power tools, are they just here? or everywhere? There is a complete range in makita green called TOTAL, another in a medium bright blue called FORD, and yesterday I found another range in almost de-walt yellow called FF GROUP!

    titebond 3 working life

This was discussed a while back, and I found out about the date codes on the bottles. I discovered that the large bottle I had was made in 2009  I had bought it from the official Cyprus importer 2 years ago, it has an official shelf life of 2 years, so it was 7 years out of date when...

    Knife blade blanks

A while back some one posted links to knife blade blank suppliers. Of course, I've lost the links  (hammer) I'm looking for a wider than normal blank, 50 mm wide. Fairly long but width is the most important one. Not necessarily damascus, just good carbon steel.
