    Band Saw Blade Blues

just a newbie her but I just bought a new small bandsaw - you might want to scroll down a bit and look at my topic on bandsaw tracking - got some good replies. 20 minutes to cut 1 metre - wow something wrong there alright. I just ripped some oak about 50mm thick and it took about a minute and I...

    bandsaw tracking

scrit - thanks for that, very useful. OK so I rang Axminster technical support and here's their advice which probably echos what some of you have already said. Tension the blade till it makes a note like an instrument - too little will sound flappy - too much won't ring. So I did that -...

    bandsaw tracking

Lee - great stuff very helpful thanks. nola - does your blade run smack in the middle of the wheel then? Yes the mitre fence isn't brilliant but the fences are supposed to be upgraded ones from the original. devonwoody - thanks for putting me in the picture about tpi etc I think a call to the...

    bandsaw tracking

DaveL - yes I was thinking along the same lines - thanks devonwoody - as a newbie here I don't know where everyone is coming from. I'm guessing that someohow you are associated with the said company? My main use at the moment is for ripping down hardwood planks about 25mm thick into into strips...

    bandsaw tracking

getting wheels coplanar might be difficult due to it having two seperate doors for access to wheels so can't get a single staright edge across them both at same time. Ivan - you might have something there. It's hard to tell if wheel rubbers are crowned or not but they look flat to me. that...

    bandsaw tracking

Thanks everyone. The machine is Axminster AWSBS2 and yes it does have a tilt adjuster. I have the manual with it which tells you to set the blade to centre of the wheel. Turning the adjuster clockwise moves it to the back of the wheel. What happens is the blade tends to run with the teeth just...

    bandsaw tracking

Just got my new Axminster (cheapo) bandsaw and setting it up. It says to set the blade central on the top wheel. It is impossible to get it running central, it tends to go to one edge or the other no matter how fine I try to adjust. The wheels have rubber round them and I'm wondering if even if...

    newbie needs sharpening advise

thanks - I think I just need a simple method like that. It's easy to get carried away looking for the perfect solution but for my purposes I don't need to be too precise.

    Veritas Honing guides

I'm wondering about same question. As an occasional woodworker who has never really got to grips with "proper" working practises I am trying to upgrade my tools and learn a bit more. I have an old eclipse I bought secondhand and the problem I find is that narrow chisels aren't held securely...

    newbie needs sharpening advise

Hi again Is it usual to put a micro bevel on all chisels and plane irons. What angles are best? I have a fairly good double sided oilstone but it's getting a bit hollow and some cheapo diamond stones and an old honing guide but it doesn't hold the blades square. What is a good not-too...

    newbie needs plane advice

Hi Does anyone know a good site that covers the use of different planes and descriptions etc. I have inherited a couple of planes and not sure what types are best for what jobs. Confused about smoothing planes, shooting planes, try planes etc.

    PVA

Hi, being an occasional woodworker I have just bought small bottles of Resin W for glueing which have cost a couple of quid or so. I noticed in B&Q and such you can get huge bottles of general PVA for not much more (often used for sealing plaster and concrete etc). What's the difference and is...

advice needed for making workbench dogs

Hi Newbie here asking real basic stuff - haven't done a lot since way back at school. I bought an old beech bench top recently, looks like it might have been a school one with vices both sides. I've made a base for it and want to fit it out with a few useful aids now. It has square dog holes...

    help choosing bandsaw please

Yes that does help thanks. I've had a reply from Axminster to say that their machine is in fact the same as the SIP except they have added and upgraded fence and mitre stop as the SIP one isn't very good. Also price includes a metal cabinet, free next day delivery. what more can I say I think...

    help choosing bandsaw please

Thanks for the welcome everyone. The SIP looks like it might be same machine as the Axminster in different dress. Except Ax is a bit cheaper and comes with a cabinet stand. Not sure about blades, toothe sizes etc got a lot to learn - what would be a good alrounder for cutting 1 inch hardwood please
