    Jacobs chuck key

Thanks guys. I'll try the K32, as advised by Phil.

    Jacobs chuck key

Just bought an old lathe with a No 32 Jacobs chuck (1MT, 0-3/8", 1/4" pilot hole), but no key. Does anyone know which key I need. I think it may be either K32 (10 teeth) or K2 (11 teeth), but I'm not sure which.

    attaching pergola to wall

Thanks guys for all your help/suggestions. I quite like the idea of the dovetailed notch (not only for the bragging rights!). I assume this would still need a screw from above to avoid any chance of the rafter lifting off? Would pre-drilling and a M8 or M10 coach screw (or bolt) be the best...

    attaching pergola to wall

I would like to build a lean-to pergola attached to my house wall. What is the best way to attach the (sloping) rafters to the wall plate (ledger board). Common practice seems to be to use joist hangers, but I thought a prettier solution would be to notch the rafters into the wall plate. Would...

    pillar drill features

Thanks again guys for all your help - lots to think about. I can see that a solid old Meddings will always give superior quality, so I'll keep an eye on the 2nd hand market, but as I am only an occasional hobby woodworker with limited space I may have to compromise on something which is...

    pillar drill features

Thanks guys for you helpful comments. I guess it raises a few more questions!! For context, I guess I am looking to spend no more than about £250 for a bench-mounted drill (though I would consider buying 2nd hand). I am constrained by space, and could not consider a floor-standing model or...

    pillar drill features

I'm thinking of buying a benchtop pillar drill for woodwork and notice a couple of differences in designs:- 1. Some have a rack & pinion mechanism for adjusting the table height and some have a simple collar which just slides up and down. 2. Some have a table with parallel slots and some have...

Thanks everyone for your replies. I have now been in touch with Baileigh and they say they can provide spares. Thanks for all your help.

    Jet lathe spares

Does anyone know whether Jet lathe spares are available in the UK or can be imported cheaply?

    Triton tools - dust extraction

I have the Triton TWX7 WorkCentre with the TWX7CS001 contractor saw and TWX7RT001 router table modules. Router table is fitted with a Triton MOF001 router. I also have a Triton TPT125 thicknesser. Just wondering what other members who have any of these Triton tools use for their dust extraction...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

Wow Lonsdale73, thanks for such a mine of information! It took me a while to get me head around it, but I think I pretty well understand your setup now. If I understand things correctly, you stepped up from the 57/58mm inlet on the Titan to 63mm, for your bigger tools, rather than stepping down...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

Lonsdale73, I've just seen your post, thanks. Your setup sounds really interesting. Would you please be able to tell me more:- 1. What model Titan vac do you use? 2. What is the 'native' diameter of the inlet/hose on the Titan vac? 3. What is a Festool connector? 4. Do you use 63mm...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

Coyote - thanks for clarifying what enables a vac to be class M certified - very helpful. Myfordman - thanks for the link re sensor modules. I'll take a look. MikeK - I don't know whether what is thrown out of the thicknesser (i.e. not collected) is just chips, or dust as well. Not sure how I...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

I did some tests yesterday of my benchtop thicknesser with my existing set up (Miele domestic vac + Triton Dust Collector bucket), taking multiple passes (<1mm). 90% of the dust/chippings ended up in the dust collector bucket, with no clogging, but 10% was thrown out across the infeed table and...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

Thanks Fitz. Would your Titan be the TTB431VAC 1400W 40Ltr? What power tools do you hook yours up to and how effective is it? The only issue for me is the 1600w PTO, as my table saw is rated at 1800w. Thanks too for pointing me to the sticky and other posts. I'll take a look. And thanks...

    Dust extraction for hobby woodworker

I am an occasional hobby woodworker looking for some advice re dust extraction. I use the back half of a single garage for woodwork and my main power tools are currently (with dust port diameters outside/inside):- Triton TWX7 Workcentre fitted with modules:- Triton TWX7CS001 1800w Contractor...

    Bevelled face

Hi, My daughter has asked me to make a giant ruler height chart for my grandson. It will be about 1500mm high, 200mm wide and 20mm thick. I would like to make it with a traditional ruler profile - i.e. with a bevel either side of the face down the length of the ruler. I plan to use 3 lengths of...

Thanks for your advice everyone. In the end I was outbid on the Delta, but I shall be keeping my eyes peeled for another.

    Jet or Delta

Thanks everyone for your really helpful comments. There seems to be a general consensus that the Delta is the way to go. The lack of spares availability is as I suspected, but it is good to know that it is unlikely that I would need spares. Helpful to know too that the lack of variable speed is...

    Jet or Delta

Hi, I am looking to buy my first scrollsaw. My interests are likely to be toys, games, puzzles, models, decorations, small boxes etc. I don't yet know how important inside cutting will be to me, but, if possible, I would like that ability to be reasonably pain-free. I am currently looking at a...
