I use delron ok, but for speed reduction I think a layshaft might be a better way to go, It is more trouble to install but the bits are a lot cheaper. axle, pulleys. screw a big pulley to a small one. on a swinging layshaft.

If it is shattering near the end of the cut the teeth are too big for the pressure you are using. 14 tpi is a good all round size. 10 pi is more for 20-60mm thick stuff. just try reducing the pressure on the blade. Also cut something much thicker. see how it goes. photo shows Cut with 14tpi...

I would first turn them as they are as you would turn wet wood. Then allow lots of cheap ebay superglue to soak in it. Let them be for a week or so then finish turn. You may have to wipe some parts with superglue and "fine finish" the item.
