    Cost of Ceder of Lebanon

I have been quoted £90 + VAT for a sawn board 3.8m x 0.45m x 21mm. The volume is 0.0359 cu.m and 1.31 cu.ft. Is this a reasonable price? It seems high to me. John

    Chest of Drawers

The photo is of the first dry fit-up of the carcass - the draw runners are still to be made and fitted. The overall size is 880 wide x 1030 high x 450 deep. There will be 4 full width drawers and 2 half drawers at the top. The sides, legs and front drawer dividers are African ''Mahogany'' and...

    Isaac Lord

Very upset to see the Isaac Lord store in High Wycombe all boarded up. Although most of there stuff in recent years was from China, I can remember using their store a lot in Reading in the 60s and 70s - full of beautiful tools made in England. Hey ho, nothing stays the same. John

    Four Foot Bed Completed

After sleeping in a single bed for years and almost falling out on several occasions I've made myself one a bit wider. It's in Utile with the vertical slats in Oak for a bit of contrast. I have used Hagenia hook-in connectors after advise from Dr Bob - thanks for that Bob. John

    Side Table from Off-cuts

My current side table by my armchair is very tatty and cheap - it has a plasticy look, so thought I'd make myself a new one. I've got lots of off-cuts taking up valuable space so it wasn't difficult to sort out some suitable pieces for this small job. The legs are actually from a old table I...

    Small Table

Did a glue-up for an end rail this morning. It shows the detail for the 45 degree leg set-up that was discussed at the end of one of my recent posts. Thanks everyone for your advice on the clamping method. I used dowels (4no. x 10mm dia. per joint) which is one of the options advised by...

Any Idea What Wood This Is

I'm dismantling a gate leg table and saving the wood for future use but am puzzled as to what the wood is. The piece in the pics is a cleat from the underside of one of the flaps. The top is of the same species. I was expecting a type of ''Mahogany''. Any suggestions? Please don't make me look...

    Clamping 45 Degree Leg-Rail Joint

I've made a practice 45 deg. leg rail joint using dowels for a small table. The joint is good but to close it I need a method for clamping onto the slope of the rail. The dowels are square to the two mating faces. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. John

    Hall Table

I'm starting a new project, a hall table. It's still in the design stage. I want to try a table with legs other than straight and thought I'd have a go at something with curves. I've cut a template (see photo) for the type of shape I'm thinking of and would like to ask members for their views...

    Mahogany Substitute

I'm planning my next project, a Hall Table approx 1000 x 400mm. I have enough 20mm mahogany that I am recycling from old furniture for the top, rails and drawer fronts but don't have any 35 x 35mm for the legs. So I'm wondering if there is a suitable substitute for Mahogany that I could use...

    Aluminium Clamps Twisting

There was a thread on this a week or so ago but I can't find it under this new system. The screw thread turns until it meets some resistance then it binds and the whole clamp twists. I should have sent them back but time drifted and it never happened. I've already got quite a few of this design...

I'm selling my Wood River low angle block plane. It's a beautiful plane but just a bit too big for my small hands. It's had very little use and is in good condition - honed and ready to go. £55 incl postage or £50 collected from OX29. John

    1 + 3 Dining Chairs

I am well on with the 3 chairs to match my first one to make up a set of four. I have a minor change of design question. I'm thinking about forming a single splay to the inside of the front and back legs as marked on the photo, say 75 x 10mm. I've seen it before and to me it looks very...

    Spokeshave Chatter

I'm doing something wrong with my rounded spokeshave. I'm shaping a concave curve in Oak and can't get a clean shaving. The tool makes a series of jumps - chatter? The blade is razor sharp. Any ideas? My flat spokeshave is fine for convex curves - nice clean shavings. John

    Oak Chair - Joinery Complete

Just completed my first dining chair - 3 more to go (maybe). It wasn't the ordeal I had imagined. Even the angled tenons fitted well. I deliberately kept the design simple, using PS's Masterclass example as a guide but much lighter than his as no robust use expected - no lower leg rails for...
