Very faint print on book, Christopher Gabriel and the Tool Trade in 18th Century London 1770-1809

I got it from Amazon (I know). I'm not sure it's worth the effort of returning it. It's published by Roy Arnold of Ipswich. The front and back covers are sort of blurry and the grey text is a bit grainy, like if it was printed from a scan, using a computer printer. Weird thing is it has the...

Very faint print on book, Christopher Gabriel and the Tool Trade in 18th Century London 1770-1809

Has anyone bought this book recently: Christopher Gabriel and the Tool Trade in 18th Century London 1770-1809. On nearly all of the pages, the text and graphics are light grey, yes it's readable but it's hard work and unpleasant. A few pages have actual normal black text. I wonder if anyone...

I got this reply from DMT: I have only seen one online advice not to use softer metals (softer than hardened steel) on a diamond stone.

    What hammer for chisels?

Round mallets are for carving where the angle of the chisel or gouge is constantly changing. Rectangular mallets are for chopping mortices, ie carpentry/woodwork/joinery.

    Softer metals on diamond stone

I read that softer metals like brass, iron, and laminated blades should not be used on diamond stones because the abraded particles will clog the stone and cannot be be removed. Does anyone have any knowledge or opinion on that ?

    Stanley Block Plane ID

Mine has a fault, the bed is not in line with sole, you have to sharpen the the blade with a skew and it ends up skew in the plane.

Mine has "G12 060" stamped on the side. The earlier 60 1/2 didn't have the lateral adjuster and had a different blade. It could called the later version of the 60 1/2. Blade: https://la.stanleytools.global/en/Hand_Tools_Finishing_Removal_Tools_Planes/product/0-12-504/block-plane-iron-g12-060-nb

Did you buy any cheap tools that surprised you with being actually good?

Yes, small Lidl pull saw, came with 2 blades, £8 Lidl diamond needle files, 8 or 10 for under £5. Aldi/Lidl chisels, giveaway price of £2 each or less. I haven't seen them in Lidl/Aldi for years. Lidl still do the pull saws but they are not the same.

    Language, phonetics, pronunciation and etymology.

Two annoying things: speaking with a creaky voice, where people try to lower their speaking voice pitch by so much that that their voice starts to creak, also called vocal fry, upspeak, where the pitch goes up at the end of phrases as if it's a question but it's not.

They are electric assist bikes, they still need to be pedalled. Legally, they are classed as pedal cycles. Electric bikes which are controlled by a throttle and which don't need to be pedalled are motor vehicles and are subject to to the same regulations as a motorbike.

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

It's actually legal to carry a locking blade/fixed blade knife or a large folding knife in public if there's a good reason. A good reason includes for work, taking it home after buying it from a shop etc. Carrying it around just in case you might need to use it is not a good reason.

Perhaps if they put a comma in the sentence, it might make it less ambiguous ie: "Lock knives: have blades that can be locked, and refolded only by pressing a button." and changed it to something like "Lock knives have blades that can be locked, and refolded only by pressing or activating a...

Plane blade edge from a Tormek?

What's "grade stone" or "grading the wheel" on a Tormek? The Tormeks at work have one abrasive wheel and one leather wheel. I thought Tormeks are for grinding, yes slow but no dust and no overheating, then you hone on a bench stone(s), then an optional strop. I never use the leather wheel as I...

Whats your favourite penknife or multi tool .

Yes, I usually lock the lock the blade when it's closed even though I don't carry it around. It doesn't have a spring to hold the blade open or closed, unlike most other folding knives.
