    Thanks, hadn’t found those.

    Simonswerk hinge quality?

I have used simonswerk hinges quite a bit, the advantages being the selection of finishes available and the availability of smaller sizes. I have found them to be of high quality, a tightish feel and consistent size with nice square edges that don’t need fettling. As hornbeam says the knuckles...

    Finish for Oak Bathroom Vanity

I tried your recommendation on some small beaded oak doors I’ve made for a Bathroom basin cabinet and I’m pleased with the results, thank you. Nice finish without brush marks or masking of the grain, but it took the instructed 3 coats to achieve. I was going to use osmo but wanted something a...

Passing Cyclists in UK with a car Genuine help question

There are are some really helpful knowledgeable woodworkers on this forum who l have the greatest respect for, but I am sickened again (as this isn’t the first time) at the level of predjudice, lack of empathy and selfishness directed at cyclists. The picture shown by Deema doesn’t show a...

    Cutting bowl blanks, help needed

Hello Alex, just came across your message, rather late, sorry and thanks for the input. I bought an electric makita in the end and although not industrial or as mobile as the petrol offerings, it’s ok and doesn’t offend my neighbours. The maximum diameter I can turn on my lathe is 500mm, and...

    Cutting bowl blanks, help needed

Just watched this and really helpful thank you. I was looking to purchase a chainsaw, going through the petrol/electric debate. That electric version you have seemed to cope admirably. Your procedure was also very useful. Thanks. Alex

    Heating a garage workshop

As others have said, for a comfortable environment to work in and to stop condensation/rusty tools, you need to insulate and slow down the transition from hot to cold & vice versa. I’ve done that in my workshop including the floor and ceiling and run an 80w bar heater throughout winter which...

    Driveway Gates

Thanks, I’ve cut them square now and will add the angles with a chisel and guide block. Bit time consuming, but accurate and controllable. Olly Bradshaw uses the pu glue, but the limited open time scares me ! For the wedges, no problem. I’ll check out the hinges, thanks.

    Driveway Gates

Thanks Mark, you’re right, 900 or even 1200 maybe.

    Driveway Gates

Thanks Johnyb, especially your encouragement on the weight issue ! I tried the hand wheel technique and gave up, too messy. 3mm is a skinny wedge, perhaps 8mm is ok then ?

    Driveway Gates

Making some iroko gates for my driveway and have a few questions that I’m hoping someone could answer please. The timber is 70 thick with 23 through mortises which I want to wedge. How wide and deep should the wedges be ? I’ve cut the mortices on the mortice machine ( loads of cuts with a 3/8”...

    Question about bike brakes

Triton, agree with most of what you say and looking at your list of steeds, I would say you are mostly an off-roader And for off road riding, disc brakes are a must. I have a couple of mtb’s both fitted with quality disc set ups and they both squeal like a frightened pig and when they’re...

(Yet!) another Wadkin 10AGS restoration thread

Like you I’m a sucker for the old heavyweight machines, have refurbished a couple of wadkins and they are fantastic quality. That’s a great purchase and good for accurate work especially with such a sturdy, well supported fence. The motor bearings should be a doddle. Personally I prefer the...

    Finishing sanders

Those sanders look to be excellent vfm. I’d be interested in the dust extraction efficiency as my workshop is fairly small and getting the dust removed at source is a primary concern. If it means spending the money I’ll do it, just wriggling at the moment as 500 seems excessive !

    Finishing sanders

That looks a useful option Danst. and with the 3mm travel is ideal for finishing birch ply which like veneer it only needs light sanding usually. I have an rts400 which looks quite similar in size, bought on Mr Millards recommendation and it’s brilliant with fantastic dust collection. Just...

    Finishing sanders

Take your point Ian, I am aware that the plane leaves the best possible finish but veneered panels need a light sand and maybe my planing is not up to muster as sometimes on larger areas I get a few small tracks. I’m definitely not looking to hog off loads of material, just a light sand with...
