Hi As a newbie I got my first router last year- a 1/4" Bosch POF 1200 on offer on Amazon. It's really good for free hand, & I like it, but it's not really suitable for the bigger jobs or table mounting. I've just been given a Rutlands table so I'm going to get a bigger one to hang under it...
