    Sawdust...

Cat litter, I keep all my sawdust and just mix all types/grades in one bag. I don't generate enough to have constant free litter but I buy the big bales of bedding sawdust too. It works out as a fraction of the cost of dedicated litter and works just as well. Issues around what wood etc are a...

Yes it's a barn, insulation isn't much of an issue really as you just wear a hat ;)

    Shop at last

I posted back in 2014 on a small workshop I was getting by with at the current house at that time, Having since moved twice and gone through two other shops, each larger and better organised. I've finally got something I can work in happily and comfortably, and most of all I have the space to...

    Magnetic phone car holders

Magnets will do zero harm to your phone in any way. If your phone happens to have a magnetic compass built in then obviously it will be effected and suffer possible lasting issues. But every other part of the phone is totally safe from magnets unless you happen to be using things strong enough...

    Small Shops

Provided you keep your order value small enough you will not need to worry about custom charges. So if say you found yourself a nice hand saw that was priced at £50 in the US but you could not find it for less than £150 in the UK, then provided you can get yourself some free p&p you should not...

    Small Shops

I tend to try and avoid anything above a certain size due to the draconian postage to NI, the oil tank while annoying is no major problem as there is plenty of space for the hose to get in. At the moment I am waiting on some led downlights from the states so I can redo the lighting through it...

    Small Shops

No doubt I am not alone in having to make do with a small space to work in, as such it has forced me to try and think creatively about storage and how best to use space. Just wondering what other folks do to resolve this problems and if they wish to offer up their own methods for small shops...

    Second hand saw thoughts

Thanks for the helps folks, to be honest I will be happy enough if it functions and a mini band saw for most of the things I have in mind. One other question is about the blade guard, I know it can be a contentious issue But I like to remove these on pretty much every tool I have and instead use...

    Whats this?

If this is in the wrong section could a mod please move it as I wasn't entirely sure where to put this post. I was given this attachment today and i' not quite sure what it is for. From the looks of things I am guessing it goes into a drill chuck to cut along edges, but I cannot see any way to...

    Second hand saw thoughts

Picked up this saw today after seeing it on a second hand site. I am well aware that generally anything with "NuTool" today is slang for plastic rubbish that will fall apart. So was a little apprehensive on the quality when I went to view it. However it seems to be a much older model as there is...

    Face mask recommendations

+1 for the modlex 8000. I have one and it's very comfortable to wear, the ease of replacing filters was a big bonus for me. Also I have yet to notice any misting up of any glasses/goggles even after half hour or so of wearing at a time. For general light work I have a pair of standard safety...

    My Garage, aheemmmm Workshop

There is due to be another (possibly final) amendment for the 17th later this year. The 18th will be out likely 2014 unless they decide the 17th needs amendment number 27849634. Been zapped myself a couple of times so can understand your apprehension yet I still always feel safer around...

    Help with making clamps

I recall seeing some nice designs for handmade clamps in one of Robert Wearing books. The basics being a pair of faces with threaded bar between you simply screw to tighten. Being on a very tight budget these appeal to me compared to the price of even small grip clamps, and I don't forsee any...

    My Garage, aheemmmm Workshop

As long as you abide by the 17th ed methods and so forth you can happily do the work yourself. It's only the certificate and any wiring onto the mains you need to worry about paying a spark for. I can't recall the exact wording to hand but either the onsite guide or just 17th ed says work...

    Help finding brass

Can't recall where I saw these things but the idea has stuck in my head. I am considering making up some wooden light switches, with the possibility of extending the idea to other socket types also. The base design is simple enough of a square with a bevel edge, and depending on the wiring...

    WIP - My First Workbench

Sorry for the delay but the bench I made is approx: 21" depth 72" Width 36" High ( I can never hack bending down while working for long without pain) Have to admire you making proper joints for your first bench, I ended up uses screws and glue to just get something solid and working that will...

    WIP - My First Workbench

Having just done my first bench I can say I'm glad I cut down the width. The original plans called for a bench 26" deep yet I find even with just 21" I have more than enough space. The channel in the back for holding tools happily doubles up as extra support for wider pieces of work.

    MDF warping help?

I'm making a new tool cabinet and the plans call for using plywood as it reduces the chances of stuck drawers through wood warping with humidity. I have two sheets of 18mm mdf that were over ordered from my last project. I know that if the stuff gets physically wet it becomes a nightmare, but...

    French cleat help please

I'm in the process of making up some proper workshop furniture so that I can really start learning things without the silly problems of wobbly benches, dust filled cupboards etc etc. My current piece is a wall hanging tool cabinet using a plan I found on line. It calls for using French cleats to...

    SDS drill chuck adapter

Kills the chuck, I've done it a acouple of times over the years swearing that the chuck was cheap rubbish until my brain decide to work and I realised that x amount of newtons and key/keyless chucks don't mix.
