Wood related books - now all spoken for.

I wonder if any of you lot would like these: Currently being plugged by Mortise and Tenon magazine, but be warned it is more about the author's philosophy than actual woodworking. Read once, pretty much as new. I'm a pole lathe turner. It's not going to happen .... As new condition...

    Sanitary ware ...

This might be a silly question, but maybe someone here can shed some light ... Why, on seemingly all sanitary ware, are any holes made at least twice the size required ? Ceramic washbasins, plastic baths - the taps tails are as standard a size as you could wish for, 1/2" or 3/4" pipe threads...

Tall stool from green ash and elm

Fed up of talking Brexit, time for a bit of woodwork. I started this stool at a Christmas meet at Wimpole Hall. As is traditional, it has taken a while. I thought I could make a stool to keep in the shed at the allotment for rest and contemplation breaks. The wood available was ash - this is...

    Cracked Tiger 2000 wheel

My Scheppach Tiger 2000 wheel seems to have a radial crack in it. I suspect the shaft and fixing nut corroding is responsible. For the time being, it is still in one piece so just about usable, this being a slow wheel. What to replace it with ? It is 200mm dia, 12mm bore, and 40mm wide. So...

    Millers Falls cigar shave

I find myself periodically tempted to try one one of these. But they don't come cheap, so ... anyone who's used one (Pete ?) - are they good ? How do they compare with more conventional curved base spokeshaves ? The voice of reason in me says that the originals seem fairly rare, and that...

    Small aquarium stand

This was a few years back, but I thought I'd share it as we seem to have aquarium talk breaking out. This is at the much more modest end of the scale. We had picked up a 65L tank for free from my SIL, and my son wanted to have some fish. We were struggling to find a place to put it, having...

    Saw files

I was sharpening a big rip saw this morning, and I notice my big saw file is a bit worse for wear. It is the same one I've used to sharpen my one-man crosscut saw a few times, so no wonder really. Maybe time for a new one. Doing a search, I see quite a bit of historic moaning about the...

    Pig sticker handles

Suppose I had a slightly beat up mortice chisel of this sort. If I were to replace the handle, what is the best choice of wood ? For chisels with hooped handles ash would be normal, but it splits a bit easy for a handle without hoops. I think I've seen beech used? I have ash, beech...

    Refinishing bathroom cabinet

I made a cabinet and some shelves for the bathroom quite a few years ago, in steamed beech. It didn't quite match the (bought) mirror frame, so thinking I was being clever I mixed various clear and tinted spirit based polyurethane varnishes to get a nice match. The finish is now getting...

    Yet another chair

I don't know if you are all bored of greenwood chairs yet, but perhaps its a break from discussing the merits of the new look forum :D Some time ago, I was speculating - a bit doubtfully - as to whether Joshua Klein's method of making the back slats for his banistair back chair was actually...

    Small brace

I bought this partly out of curiosity, and partly with the thought it might be useful for lighter jobs in confined spaces where a 10" sweep brace would be too cumbersome. There it is, alongside a full sized one for comparison. It has a sweep of just 5". What do I have ? A small brace for...

    Joshua Klein's Banister-back chair

Whilst waiting for the finish to dry on my lath back chair, I've been dipping in to Mortise & Tenon magazine, Issue 2. Particularly Joshua Klein's banister-back chair. For my not-quite-a-set off four chairs, I want four different back styles, so far I have a spindle back, ladder back and a lath...

    Lath back greenwood chair

I sneaked out yesterday to do a bit of chair building. I've not taken a WIP series of pictures this time, as the processes are much the same as I've shared with you before - froe, axe, drawknife, pole lathe etc, and I don't want to bore you. The difference here is the style of back; I'm making...

    Endangered crafts

Did you know that both plane making and saw making have been identified in a list of Critically endangered crafts by the Heritage Crafts Association ? What's more, there is even a sum of money to be awarded for continuing the crafts on their list. Mind you, it is a £1000 and there are 62...

    Vindolanda planes

Watching Alice Roberts on Digging for Britain the other night, they showed two Roman woodworking planes being unearthed at Vindolanda, in fairly good preservation in anaerobic conditions under a floor. Another job for rxh, perhaps? Can't find any photos on line yet unfortunately, but they were...

    Christmas shopping the fun way

I went Christmas shopping in Chester with the family at the weekend. If you must, this is the way to do it: What a splendid machine. I just love that there are people around crazy enough to undertake a project like that. At Chester station we were joined by 70013 Oliver Cromwell at the...

    Wooden plane on Ebay

So this is an ended listing now in EBay, but I can't work out what the heck I'm looking at and it is bugging me. Anyone figure it out ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-PLANE ... true&rt=nc You'll need to scroll a bit for the photos.

    Brazing flux

Are there any easy ways of removing the residues of brazing flux ? I'm using the pink Sifbronze stuff. It leaves a hard, glassy residue which is a s*d to scrape out of corners etc. Perhaps I'm missing something.

    Mortice and Tenon Magazine

I got my copy of issue #2 yesterday. I've only had time for a quick glance, but there seems to be a lot of chairmaking, and even a pole lathe in there ! And a lot of photographs of period dovetail joints. I'm looking forward to a good read.

    Chairmaker's spoon bits

In another thread, AndyT mentioned chairmaker's spoon bits, in the context of boring clean holes at an angle into chair legs. I had tried an auger, which was too aggressive, so gave up and used a forstner in a cordless drill. These bits used to be made in Sheffield by Clico, who are now sadly...
