    JET 1642 116E thread size

Bought a new chuck from Axminster after checking online for the thread size for a JET 1642 lathe, I didn't notice that the model designation had changed from 116E to EVS, the EVS model has an 1 1/4 x 8tpi thread, so that is what I ordered, it doesn't fit, the thread outside diameter seems to be...

    Guess the timber

A bit of fun, I was very fortunate to be given a couple of logs, this is the beautiful interior (wet, so it will look less impressive once dried I guess) can you ID it?

    Green Bowl.

Made from Sycamore and gold tracks done with High Voltage then filled with gold coloured powder, colours are Chestnut Spirit Stains and Chestnuts Acrylic Lacquer to finish. .

    Natural edge x 2

A sort of bowl, stretching the term a little. Timber is Hawthorne. Normally I would tidy off the base dovetail, but in this case the thing is so fragile that trying to reverse it to do so would definitely end in disaster, so, I left it as a foot. Finish is Shellac, a bit overdone on this making...

    Sectional vessel.

I finally got this completed today, it was a steep learning curve and though I am happy with it, there are a lot of errors in it, most unseen and due to the process rather than the turning, it was a tough cookie to turn and even tougher to photograph. It's 14" tall. Made from a Beech wood top...

    Using up the short bits.

This was made from a 9 x 2 inch Laburnum branch, something that would usually get used for either a small drawer knob or perhaps a finial, I thought I would have a bit of fun with it. Finished height is 4" and the ball is 40mm. All one piece.

    Hollow forms and pot.

Couple of recently finished pieces, the Hollow forms were coloured with Chestnut Spirit stains and Lacquers. The Olive Ash sweet pot, I am not wildly happy about this one, the lid is a poor fit and ungainly in the size of the lid base component.

    Hawthorne Log

My son Richard found this Hawthorne tree, roots an'all, in a roadside hedge, first thoughts of course, once it is home, is what to do with it? What would you do? I have already done, and will post up the pics later, but I am interested in others ideas. More pics tomorrow!

    Back at it again

After a fairly long break during which a good deal of time was spent rebuilding the decaying workshop, I finally got it sorted and am back on the lathe. It's been sometime since I posted any pics, I hope this bunch arn't too boring! Colouring is done with Chestnut's spirit stains and the finish...

    Use Carbide? Interesting vid.

Although a fair bit of detail is left out, this video of the making of Tungsten carbide tips is quite interesting. Click here for video

    Pot & Vase

I made the little pot as a sort of "proof of concept" using the Jo Sonja range of acrylic paints, these are the irridescent ones, I was inspired to try these by Dalboy who used them to such exceptional effect on a recent bowl, I think it worked OK, so thanks loads Derek!! :) The pot is about...

    SWWC Demo

I had the pleasure of conducting a demo on colouring and finishing at the south wales woodturning club last week, it was well attended and I got asked many questions (which I think is a good thing). Nice bunch altogether, and they have put a very positive write up on their new website, pop over...

    Some new stuff

I made quite a lot of stuff lately but have been remiss at the photography, however, it became necessary to get down to it, so here are a few items. I'll add some details later, got to go out for and hour.

    Colouring video

While I was doing some of the work on the Blue and Silver bowl I videoed part of the process, some of you may find some aspects of the video of interest. It's not complete in so far as I only get to the point of finished colouring with the stains, I don't cover finishing or the application of...

    A couple of new items.

I had these at the NBG so some of you will already have seen them, but they are interesting enough I think to post in here. First up is a medium sized rather rustic/decorative bowl in Laburnum, taken from a really old tree in the Preseli mountains, the heartwood had rotted out of the main trunk...

    pantograph router jig

Not being a cabinet maker or even having posted in here before, I don't know if this jig is already common knowledge, but today was the first time I have seen it and I thought it might be of interest to some people at least! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDPrFJazD3Q&feature=youtu.be

    NBG Wales Weekend of Wood

This coming weekend is the National Botanical Gardens "Weekend of Wood" http://www.gardenofwales.org.uk/news/special-weekend-devoted-to-wood/ I was a bit surprised to see a picture of me colouring a bowl on the webpage! I'll be back with Terry Smart of Chestnut Products again this year doing...

    Olive Ash Bowl

A while back I posted some shots of green turned bowls from a very nice piece of Ash, this one in particular looked very promising. Well, it dried very well and is now a finished piece, here's how it finished up. (the two coins are for scale)

    Prototype

Some time ago, my son Richard, called me into his own workshop and showed me this odd device made from an old microwave transformer, basically a high voltage source, using this he proceeded to burn some interesting patterns into a piece of wood. "That would look great on a bowl" said I, and...
