    JET 1642 116E thread size

Hi All, it did turn out to be the M33, apparently yes it was produced for the euro market, thanks for the replies and help. Yes Sachakins it is that lathe, bizzarely while searching the net for specs I never came across that site, but I see it does list the M33 thread, all the others listed the...

    JET 1642 116E thread size

Bought a new chuck from Axminster after checking online for the thread size for a JET 1642 lathe, I didn't notice that the model designation had changed from 116E to EVS, the EVS model has an 1 1/4 x 8tpi thread, so that is what I ordered, it doesn't fit, the thread outside diameter seems to be...

    Anyone worked with holly?

Holly is good for turning but it depends on what you make with it, from experience I find any single item is usually OK, but dual items such as boxes are not, for the reason that Holly never seems to keep still, a well fitted lid today, even when the wood is dry, can be off shape and not fitting...

    What wood

Sapele often has a somewhat striped appearance, vertical bands of alternating light and dark wood, used to be a common wood on flat non panel doors. A lot of red timber is called mahogany by people who think anything reddish is just that.

Help please - "tool" gone "all sticky" outside

I have a Kowa scope that did the same, I sprayed it with a rubberised paint that a friend had used on a home buil;t aircraft (RV type) and it did the trick.

    More wood identification please

Looks like Greenheart to me too, I find it's quite brittle in nature as well as very hard and heavy, be careful of the splinters, they go septic and the dust. One odd thing about it, if you turn it (I made a small box from it) when sanding, the dust is so heavy you can see it dropping straight...

    Head/tail alignment

I have a Jet lathe and thought I had a similar problem, actually the real season they don't line up is most likely the feet need adjusting, even cast iron beds can twist little, try leaning against the tail stock and pushing a bit, I bet it will move rleative to the headstock (lock it to the bed...

    Guess the timber

Well that certainly sounds very promising, I'll rough them out and once they're complete I post the pics. :D

    Guess the timber

Good Guesses, but Richard C gets it right, it's Plum. I am usually pretty much on the money with timber ID as I have seen and worked quite a wide variety of native timber at least, but this one would have a puzzle, never had a piece of plum timber to work before, isn't it pretty cut green? :D...

    Guess the timber

A bit of fun, I was very fortunate to be given a couple of logs, this is the beautiful interior (wet, so it will look less impressive once dried I guess) can you ID it?

    Hold onto your hats

It's gone more towards the northwest here now and picked up, more frequent gusts, about 60-70mph at a guess.

How long did it take you ( or your students) to learn to cut gapless dovetails

"Because I want to" would seem to be a reasonable assumption.

    What is this!?

Looks more like some kind of larvae silk cocoons, various kinds of insects have cocoons similar to this, I often find clusters of moth cocoons in nest boxes when I do the annual cleanout. Pretty sure it's not fungus of any kind. Post it up on an entymology forum, I bet they'll know.

    cicular ring tipped woodturning chissel

Wherever you may find one, (I think I got mine at Axminster) you'll likely find it spends most of it's time in a rack, They are pretty tricky to use and tend to dig in a lot, especially in dry wood, less so with green, plus sharpening isn't easy either, you would be better off with a carbide...

Woodworm.............. and how to remove chisel handles

As long as the metal ferule is removed popping them into the microwave for a couple of minutes can be effective too, done that for a few spalted bowls that had a resident or two present. Been fine since.

    Identify my 🪵

Tough call from the bark alone, it has a Holly like look to it (well, the first one does anyway), but also Sycamore, Ash tends to have a sort of mosaic pattern on the smooth young bark, but gets fissured with age. I wouldn't want to say for certain without a good look at the timber itself but I...

    How do you identify wood?

To be able to look at a timber and say what it is without referring to another resource is really down to time and experience more than anything else, you handle enough different timbers, especially native ones where you might have experience not only of the timber but the tree and bark etc, you...
