Storing Dried Timber outside undercover in sealed plastic sheets?

I am curious whether anyone had done this or knows about it. I know a company near me who store either their timber or manmade boards outside undercover wrapped inside plastic sheets. How effective is this? Do many companies do this? I guess if the bags are fully sealed it should mean no...

    Fisheyes in Epoxy? (pics)

I am repeatedly having problems with fisheye appearing after applying west 207 epoxy on a piece. My process has been wash with water and mirca abrasive nonwoven pad, clean up with paper towels to remove amine blush, sand using abranet 80 grit with extraction. Suck off dust, wipe with paper...

What is this in my finish? (Pictures)

I'm using epoxy as a finish and have these bits after the finish has set. Sanding it out till they're gone but I'd just like to know what they are, dust? Why does it create a kind of island around, do the specs perhaps gather extra finish to them because of some sort of surface tension...

2 part polyurethane - shelf life once opened?

I'd like to use 2 part poly but just a smallish amount at a time. I'm wondering if the varnish still reacts with oxygen like regular varnish does. Or will it stay fine till the part B is added even if the can has been opened and exposed to air? Thanks

Chiseling mark out lines-how to deal with chisel push back?

When using a marking gauge to make your layout marks, if you use a chisel directly on these lines I find the line gets pushed back slightly away from the beveled side. How do people you overcome this? I was looking at the marking gauges that use a knife as then you should be able to increase...

Will beeswax application improve surface grip over osmo?

I have finished a piece of cherry with osmo oil, but find the surface too is too slippers for my liking. I seem to remember reading once that beeswax finish give some degree of grip but can't remember where I saw that. Does anyone know? I suppose sanding the surface with a lower grip would...

Your opinion in using Threatend/Endangered woods?

I've recently decided it doesn't feel right to use these species. I wonder why they're pretty easy to get hold of though, blackwood, ebony, wenge, many more for example. Does it make any difference to you if the wood comes from somewhere it's certified? I imagine it probably is quite easy to...

Why is it considered good for a finish to penetrate?

I notice this in marketing but also on various posts or people talking on YouTube. But what use is a finish inside the wood, surely the only place it does anything useful is at the surface or above it? I suppose a hard finish like shellac or varnish that penetrated might be good in hardening...

Why does a metal file last longer than sandpaper?

I was thinking if say aluminium oxide is harder than hardened steel, why doesnt it last as long? I'm thinking it's because a file/rasps shape means it cuts, whereas sandpaper is more like a scrape so more wear right on its tips? The rasp's tips aren't engaged as much as the sandpaper tip.

Is there any problem with doing this? (electrical idea)

Is there any reason why it would be a bad idea to turn on a dust extractor directly from the mains switch as opposed to its individual on? So the usual button would be held to on, so it start immediately when receives power. I was thinking I could get a power switch remote control to make...

Sabre saw vs Jigsaw Blade Wander

I was wondering if anyone has some experience of this for breaking up say 2" thick hardwood boards. I've used my jigsaw but the blade wander if terrible, I do have a good blade in it too. Anything over an inch just seemd too much for it. Do you think i'd have better luck if i tried a sabre...

Resawing on bandsaw, which side of blade bulk of material?

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this. If you are taking say 1/4" off a 2" board would you be better off having the 1 + 3/4 part be up against the fence or the 1/4" piece. I get the feeling it's better to have the large part up against the fence but not entirely sure why that is.

What to use as barrier, meths based dye and shellac finish?

I've found a dye a like the appearance of but intend to use shellac on top. The problem I have is the dye is very sensitive to methylated spirit and will be disturbed leaving a sort of blotched effect. Usually as a barrier coat I'd go for shellac, could anyone suggest an alternative? I think...

    Wondering simething about beam conpression

Beams under force are meant to compress on their top section and have tension on the opposite side. Something I'm wondering is that the shortest distance between two points, for instance the end of a beam is a straight line. When the beam bends, does the top section get shorter while bending...
