    Axminster AW305WL - I'm sniffing the bait.

    Thanks. Will PM you later.

    Axminster AW305WL - I'm sniffing the bait.

Ha ha! Thanks for that. I'm 75 and been processing some of the same thoughts as yourself. I'm hoping to fund buying the lathe using some of the money raised recently by the sale of metalworking kit so I have a self-imposed budget. I see that Axminster offer is off the table at the moment as...

    Axminster AW305WL - I'm sniffing the bait.

I've been keeping an eye on the 'for sale' stuff, and did spot an Axminster a while back, and that was what got me thinking about them. I've seen concerns expressed about the electronics on the variable speed lathes which could be a concern on a secondhand machine. Maybe the newer ones are a bit...

    Axminster AW305WL - I'm sniffing the bait.

Yes, I found that out to my cost some years ago when I bought a Boxford lathe with no tooling. However, I'm lucky in that I kept my bench grinder and last week a friendly neighbour offered me a set of decent* woodturning chisels FOC. I didn't immediately accept as I was, and still am, a bit...

    Axminster AW305WL - I'm sniffing the bait.

I've done bits and pieces of turning (mostly knobs, handles, legs and spindles for furniture I've made) over the last 50 years, but I sold my Myford ML8 about 13 years ago to help fund another project. I now fancy getting a small lathe to help use some of the small oddments of timber accumulated...

    What lathe for small jobs?

+1 for looking at the secondhand market. It's not hard to pay as much for the tooling as it is for the lathe. Ask me how I know. 😊

    Scam warning...

We nearly came unstuck just before Christmas. Facebook was carrying ads for at least 2 clothing and outdoors kit companies. Looked totally authentic and just like the official websites of the companies concerned. Despite a whole working lifetime in IT ops and networking I was pretty convinced...

There is an overdue payment under your name. Please, settle your debts ASAP, aye right.......

Reckon I'm getting 6-8 phishing or scam emails a day that Outlook spam filters are missing. They're just a total pain in the @RSE. When I only had a handful of online accounts it wasn't hard to handle different passwords for each one. Now I think I had around 100 at the last count. A couple of...

    Jubilee lathe

I'm familiar with the Graduate and Jubilee models but these are bigger than 3 feet long - unless this is the bowl-turning model? Perhaps you could clarify or post a pic please? Thanks. :)

Any idea what wood school PE benches are made of?`

This was between '60 and' '65 in my case. When I went to evening classes at a different school in the early '70s the benches themselves were Beech but had Pine cupboards beneath them.

That'll be the wood then... 😉

    Setting up a plane

I didn't know that. I have a 5 that I bought cheaply at a flea market 30-odd years ago. When I got it home and stripped it down I discovered it had been dropped, cracking the main casting at the mouth. It had been welded and the weld ground flat. Still works fine.

    Setting up a plane

+1 for watching a couple of Paul Sellers videos. I know he's not everyone's cup of tea but some of his videos can be very helpful. There are several on restoration and tuning of planes.

Any idea what wood school PE benches are made of?`

Yep, they were 100% Beech at my school.

    Need to escape/reset

'Between a rock and a hard place' is where you are, for sure. As others have said, you're unlikely to be able to resolve this on your own, so where might you get some help? If your wife is part of the problem, then she could be of the solution. Does she have a close friend that you could...

Why isn't there a reasonably priced eclipse-style honing guide?

A lot of years ago I bought an original Eclipse honing guide after my 'doing it by eye' efforts were useless. It was a great help, but the tendency then is always to use the guide rather than trying to 'hone my skills' so to speak. It served me well, but some years ago I bought a Veritas MKII...

    Outgrown my lathe?

I noticed this this on eBay which has a bit lower spec than the one you mention, but almost the same power motor. I was sniffing the bait, but someone else bought it.

    Outgrown my lathe?

Thanks for this. I started with a Record DML24 20+ years ago, later a Myford ML8 which I sold when a house move meant a change of direction. I've now got a bit of an itch to get a bench top lathe, and this sounds a good option. I'm very unlikely to need to turn anything beyond its capabilities...

What do you do with all those scraps of timber?

Well, thank you folks! What a very inventive bunch you are! I shall use the winter evenings and see where those ideas lead! :)
