    Spraying and colouring paint/lacquer

I'm trying to find information on spraying mdf/wood but I'm coming up with nothing. My aim is to spray finish mdf with a primer then colour and then a clear coat. I've heard Morrells are very good but the price of their pigmented paints makes my eyes water. It's an extra £20 or so for...

    What single product to make?

I think unique or limited is much better than large batches knocked out quickly. If people want mass produced items, they buy from ikea. One of the main unique selling points with wood is craftsmanship. People want quality and to know that all the care and attention that could have gone into...

    Into motorbikes?

I one rode from a Derby to London via Grantham on my 50cc scooter...... :( It topped out at 65mph so wasn't as painful as you'd imagine.

Where for Black Walnut in the North West?

+1 Really good service and prices. Happy to let you browse/rummage and will cut down to length for free. Oh and the timber is good too.....

    Measure twice ...

Ha ha. A friend of mine (who isn't a woodworker) decided to hang an internal door himself. He spent ages planing to size, cutting the hinges and latch. I visited a couple of days later and he proudly showed me his door. I bit my tongue as long as I could but eventually I had to tell...

Not sure if its real or not but funny all the same

Very funny although if it is real, my 6yo daughter's spelling is so much better (smug parent alert)

    Thieves and burglars

I think a lot of these scenarios come down to your 'Fight or Flight' reaction. Once the adrenaline starts pumping, it's pot luck what happens. Some people run, some people will stand and negotiate and for some, the red mist will descend. Adrenaline is an incredible hormone and can make the...

Any advice for straightening/repairing this board?

What about segmenting it? Cut it in half, straighten the joint and stick a different coloured strip of wood down the middle. It would eliminate the split and most of the cupping.

Could you not make or buy something that can assist you in lifting/moving the oak around?

    Bit cross

I'm sure the huge amount of happy customers will out-shine his petty review. Most people can see through the bad reviews as user errors and not bad products.

Which grade of Diamond plate for final honing

I bought some Klingspor paper a while back. It's pretty good stuff and only pence per sheet. http://www.thepolishingshop.co.uk/acata ... discs.html

Which grade of Diamond plate for final honing

I though I would try it. Just sharpened 2 irons to 300 and 1000 (that's all I've got on my diamond stone) Planed up some oak, walnut and beech inc end grain and can honestly say I felt very little difference. Both cut well.

Which grade of Diamond plate for final honing

???? He just demonstrated that it works fine. And even if there was a difference, if an old man can't feel the difference (someone who is more likely feel it with ageing bones and muscles), is the extra time/cost worth worrying about?

Which grade of Diamond plate for final honing

Didn't Paul Sellers do a video showing that honing/sharpening above 1000g or so makes very little difference to how a blade cuts? Will see if I can find the link. Here it is. Sorry it's 250 grit not 1000 grit. http://youtu.be/UbAo4RpM7oM

    Sharpening a hand plane

No. It looks like you're tickling it and no sharpening the end. 2 hands, medium to firm pressure. Start at the back of the stone with the blade at 30 (or whatever angle you choose) Run the full length of the stone whilst slowly tilting back. You only want to tilt a small amount (1pm to 2pm on a...

    An interesting thought?

Years ago I worked for Northgate Hire and they had a huge fleet of vans sign written for Babcock..... Unfortunately the way it had been done meant that when the side door was open, the 'bab' was hidden. It was a few weeks later when the photos got to the MD. They were soon re-written. An...

    Disappointing experience with Axminster

I'm sure I read that too. I'm sure it was a member on here that got them to deliver from the shop that had the item in stock. I personally have had nothing but excellent service from both Axminster and Rutlands.
