    Creusen Grinder - good enough?

I have a Creusen 6" grinder with a 20mmx80grit grey stone and 40mmx100grit white stone. As a hobbyist, will this be OK to get the primary bevel on chisels and plane blades, or will I need different stones or even to bite the bullet and get something bigger/better?? All advice welcomed! - Roy

DMT Diamond Stones- Perforated or Solid?

Having been given Thomas Lie-Nielsen's book on sharpening for my birthday, I realise I have to take this much more seriously. I plan to use my existing bench grinder and buy a set of DMT stones, probably imported from Woodcraft. However, as always, there are so many decisions! So, any...

    Extending plunge depth in Woodrat

I have recently bought a Woodrat and also upgraded my router from an old (very old) 1/4" router to a Trend T11. I want to use my stock of 1/4" router bits in the T11 and have bought a 1/4" collet to go with the supplied 1/2" one. However, the T11/'Rat combination severely limits the plunge...

Excellent Service - DB Keighley and Royal Mail

After reading all the good things about Woodrats, I decided a couple of weeks ago to take the plunge (!). I called DB Keighley Thursday morning to put in an order and sent a cheque later that day (no credit cards for them!). They called me Friday morning to say the cheque had arrived safely...

    Woodrat Dovetail Jig

I have followed with interest the discussions (arguments? :D ) over the years about which is best, a Woodrat or a good dovetail (and other) jigs. The 'rat advert in the latest F&C magazine explains that they are developing a new accessory - a Dovetail Jig !! This seems to be...

    Air Filters or Airshield??

I am getting more and more concerned about the dust in my workshop (aka garage) and suspect I ought to add to my Axminster ADE1200 Extractor. My work is hobby only, for a few hours a week. I have found the threads on the Airshield very interesting but remember that a while ago there was a...

    Reisser screws

I'd be interested in any opinions on these screws - they are the 'standard' offering at my usual screw-buying shop but I don't think they have ever appeared in any of the threads on screws. And how do they compare for quality and usability with Spax screws?? many thanks - Roy

    Flangeless Screw Hooks

Any suggestions where I can source flangeless (aka shoulderless) steel L-shaped screw hooks, about 38mm length?? I've had no joy with net searches. I need about 50 - B&Q do them, but at 46p each, which makes the hooks more expensive than the rest of the unit I am building! Yours hopefully - Roy

    Finish for a chopping board

I have just made a chopping board and a cheese board, and have now realised I don't know what is the best finish for them! I have an unopened bottle of boiled linseed oil - will that do, or do I need another trip to the suppliers?? best wishes - Roy

    Re-grinding Planer Blades

I've taken a nick out of one of my P/T blades and it needs a re-grind. Not something I am set up to do myself, so I will need to use a sharpening service. Is it best to use a specialist, and can anyone recommend a name? Or, should I just try the local hardware store that does my shears and...

    For Sale: Axminster Thicknesser

I have decided to sell my Axminster thicknesser, bought new 18 months ago and used for less than 2 hours(!) - it still looks like new. Maximum width of stock is 12" (318 mm), max thickness is 6" (153mm). Complete with floor stand, user guide, and 100mm extractor take-off. It is suitable for...

    New old tool shop

Any hand tool enthusiast visiting East Suffolk might like to know of a new place to buy old tools. It is one of the 30 stalls in the Yoxford Antique Centre which, as you might guess, is in Yoxford on the A1120, 1 mile from the A12 junction. Probably of more interest to the general enthusiast...

    Woden - who they?

A couple of recent threads have referred to Woden tools (sash cramps, planes). I have a Woden engineer's vice, model 190/7A with 5.75" capacity and a quick release. It was my father's and, I think, must be 50+ years old. It is very heavy and very dirty! I have never previously heard of Woden -...

    Using scissor jacks ...

a thread a few weeks ago about using car scissor jacks to make clamping systems got me thinking. I have long wanted a scissor-operated platform stand in the workshop for things like supporting lengths of timber alongside a drill press - many years ago I worked in laboratories and we used these...

    New Scheppach range ....

...has been announced by Menatnma on a different thread. I am looking at upgrading my gear, and am seriously researching P/T and table saws. Can the Menatnma tell us whether the specs. for HMS 260 and TS2000 and 2500 will change, apart from the move to cast iron tables? And any comments on...

    RSBS14 bandsaw

Several posters have written highly about this bandsaw and I am thinking of buying one. However, I am worried that the current model is in the Record Select blue range (ie for first time buyers). Does anyone know whether this is the same model as the one that has been recommended? and if so...

    Scheppach buy Kity factory?

I was drooling over new machines in my 'local' store (Norfolk Saw Services - 45 miles away!) and talking to the owner, who told me that last week Scheppach had bought the Kity French factory, apparently so that they could be seen as more 'French' and so improve sales in France. But they have not...

    Basato 3

Hi - I am looking to buy my first bandsaw and would appreciate some advice. As I am short of space, it will have to double up as a rip saw as well as doing the usual band-saw things. (I already have a De Walt crosscut.) I had more or less decided on an EB BAS316 when the Basato 3 appeared...
