Why does my drill press make messy holes?

When drilling an 8mm hole in 18mm hardwood, such as poplar, oak and walnut, it's always messy and sort of split on the other side. I'm using a drill press and new drill bit. Underneath the piece being drilled is a piece of plywood. What am I doing wrong?

How do people make wooden baby rattles?

I don't mean the kind that you make on a lathe and magically the rings appear. I mean the kind where there's a plug, with some beans or lentils or bb's inside and they rattle around. It looks like there's some tool that can drill in and pull out a plug, and then you fill that space with...

Help!! How to put a logo onto a wooden piece?

A potential customer wants to order some things from me and wants his logo on them. He mentioned engraving, but alas, I do not have an engraving machine however much I would love one (been looking at the CO2 laser engravers that start at $8,000 - only a dream!) Someone suggested a stamp, and I...

Do I need a palm sander?

This is the type of thing I make, and I need to sand the face of them, the flat part, so I can paint and woodburn, and get rid of marks and dirt from the timberyard and their planing machine, etc. Currently I use my 25mm wide sanding belt, which is just getting ridiculous. It's too narrow and...

Do you do your woodworking in rented accommodation?

We live in our own flat and I do my woodworking indoors and on the balcony, and in summer, away from the building by the sheds. We're looking into renting our flat out and renting a house, but I wonder what landlords would think if they knew I was doing woodworking in the house, and also the...

    Sandpaper question-Help!

I ran out of sandpaper so bought some more, and it's not what I expected to be inside! Either this pack has messed up sandpaper in it, or i put sandpaper from another pack into my current one and thought it came in this one. It's this one: http://www.londondiycentre.co.uk/oakey- ... 2253-p.asp...

Do you need a lathe to make a ring shape?

People keep asking me to make teething rings and I figure I need a lathe, so I tell them I can't. Just want to check and make sure, is that what I'd need? I have a scroll saw and bandsaw, and could cut the shape out, but it would be flat and then take tons of sanding, both on the outside and...

    Non-toxic wood glues?

I have Evo Stik wood glue but it doesn't say it's non toxic. I need a non toxic kind, but don't know any other brands, so when I'm searching and finding them on Ebay and Amazon, I don't know if they're reputable glue brands or not! Can you recommend some?

How do you work outside in the winter?

My business is getting really busy. I make wooden toys outside. I live in a flat and don't have a workshop. I just carry all my tools outside by the communal laundry area! I remember I just started in January and was making just a few things and it was so cold outside, and that was when I...

Can you identify this heavy, dense wood?

I got a sample today from the timberyard and the people in the office didn't know what it is. it's darkish brown, and has yellow streaks in it if you look along the side. It's so heavy and dense it's more like a brick than a piece of wood! Anyone know what it is? I can take a photo later if...

    Peter Child woodburning on poplar?

Just got mine and so excited! Tried it out on maple and am getting the hang of doing it lightly so it doesn't make blobs, but can't get it to be blob-free on the poplar. Any tips or tricks? I'm using the point that was already on it. Maybe a different type of point? Really low heat?

How do you use a drill press/pillar drill?

I'm thinking of ordering this today, because I figure it would be much easier and quicker than using a hand drill? My main question is, how is the piece you're drilling held down? I'll be drilling small things like small wooden blocks for kids. I'd be getting this one...

    Waterproof finish?

Someone just purchased one of my wooden toy figures, but wants to know how she can make it waterproof? I'll be painting it with watercolours and coating it with olive oil and beeswax. She's purchasing it for an adult, so it doesn't need to be kid safe. She wants to know how this adult she's...

What type of power sander do I need?

I got a small belt and disc sander from Axminster which has been great for my tiny pieces I make. But I just resawed some wood down to about 1/4" with I think a 12 tpi blade on my bandsaw and made a small piece but it has saw marks and it's too big for the belt and disc sander. I don't know...

Is this size sanding belt ok?

Anyone know if a Screwfix 25 x 762 sanding belt is the same as an Axminster 25 x 760mm? Or are there really such slight variations in belt sanders and one really takes 760 and one takes 762?

Where do you buy sanding belts for a belt sander?

I think I need new fine grit abrasive belts for my belt sander. I was going to get it at Axminster again, but I figure there must be somewhere cheaper online? I need 25mm x 760mm. Is there a 'best place'?

How do I get the bearing off the shaft cylander thing?

Got my new bearing for my bandsaw, and I measured wrong, so the inner diameter is 1mm too big. I should have taken it off to measure!! Anyway, I can't get it of this cylindrical thing it's on. It seems impossible, how do you get it off? Also, when I spin it, it feels gritty or something...

    Why is it cutting lopsided??

Does it mean the blade is dull or something? I can't really explain it, but the cut isn't the same all the way through, it's wonky and lopsided and a little squirrel I cut out looks all crooked.

Why is my belt sander electricuting me?

My belt and disc sander is only about a month old and today and the last time I used it, it gives me shocks when I touch the metal tables on it. What is this?? I don't notice it on the bandsaw or scroll saw, but I don't want to go trying it out. If they all shocked me I would think it might...
