March 2012 Challenge ( Upload Images Here) A Tazza

Here is my entry for this month. Its made out of Mahogany, 9 inches wide and 8 inches tall. I have to admit it was rushed as I'm a bit short of free time at the moment. the main dish was turned in my K10 chuck with O'Donnell jaws using a bowl gouge, flat and round nose scrapers. sanded to 600...

Gordon, thanks for the comment, the Saturn design was clear in my head, but I was let down again by my brian to tool interaction devices  Congratulations to the winners this month, and to everyone else who entered, the quality of work is outstanding. =D> I have so so much to learn...

February Challenge ( Rules and Requirements ) ENTRIES

My entry for this month challenge. Inspiration came from the planet saturn. The base is a random off cut I had under the bench, it might be white oak but I'm not 100%. I turned it between centres with a spindle gouge and parting tool and sanded to 400 grit, then finished with bees wax. The...

2012 January Challenge ( Post Pictures HERE)

The wood for my bowl is Mahogany, its 9.5" X 2.5". I attached the blank to a screw chuck to round up and profile the outside edge, also to cut tenon. Mounted in O'donnell jaws and hollowed with 3/8" and 1/4" bowl gouge and a little touching up with a round nosed scraper. I was going to remove...

    I have the bug

Thanks Jumps, I will have to have a closer look at the wood and try and work out what it is. I have managed to get my hands on a load of Catalpa, it's a bit plain in colour but it's a joy to turn. Has anyone turned this wood? I'm trying to work out the best finish for it..

    I have the bug

Thank you all for the friendly welcome, I will get some pics posted as soon as I work it out. My setup is mostly Axminster kit, I have an old m900 lathe, a 350n bandsaw and a grinder but due to the size of my workshop (12'x5') space is an issue, but plans are afoot to extend, if I can convince...

    I have the bug

Just wanted to say Hello to you all, I've only been turning for about 8 months but I'm well and truly hooked. Have managed to squeeze a lathe and bandsaw into my cosey little shed and there's no keeping me out of there, I find turning so relaxing after a stressful day in the office.. Been...
