    Axminster AT1416VS any thoughts?

I have one and have had it since just after it was launched a few years back. I have three lathes in the workshop, an awvsl, a 1416 and a nova 1624-44. The 1416 is a brilliant lathe and it does exactly what I bought it to do, but like any lathe won't do everything perfectly. I wouldn't buy it if...

    pen kits?

Wouldn't hesitate to recommend Taylorsmirfield, excellent service, he has taken care to select some really good kits and developed some of his own.

More pens and a few questions

Sorry Ryan, but I don't agree with your post. The premise of your disagreement with what I wrote is that you are being driven by your circumstances and a confined market, ie the shops of notable quality. If someone shudders at the cost, providing that you have not costed your product absurdly...

More pens and a few questions

I sell more pens than average and would agree that for a slimline £12 is about the minimum you should charge. (£15 for a streamlime) There are two pricing modules you can use, bottom up or top down. If you work it out bottom up, take the cost of all the bits, including your bandsaw blades...

    Turning Chisels

I'm a great fan of the Ashley isles tools. I've never considered them expensive, especially if you buy them at a woodworking show - North show Harrogate 21-23 nov - where you will get hefty discounts and all your Christmas wish list sorted! Buying them unhandled as well as Philip suggests, makes...

What wood have I used ??

Joe, Think you'll find that the colour difference does not distinguish between the sap and heartwood, the colour is discoloured heartwood, the light is normal heartwood.

What wood have I used ??

You're right it was a punt, and I think you're right, sycamore. Here's a piece I cut about a month or so ago, same sort of colour, sadly the colours faded after a week or so and became the same brown as in the lidded pot.

What wood have I used ??

Any chance of a close up of the sides of the pot? Bit negative as I dont have any firm ideas but agree with Kim, its not Laburnum and I dont think its Walnut, the sapwood is too white and there appear to be many very clear distinguishing rings if that is indeed sapwood. Could it be a severe case...

    Postage charges !!!!

Kim, I am not offended by the notion that some retailers are overcharging. You have made statements that these people are profiteering and overcharging, and all I have done is to ask you to explain why you believe this is so. Please tell me why those who post out items should do so from the...

    Postage charges !!!!

No my points are not "way off the point". You do not seem to appreciate that the cost of "Postage" is not just the cost of the stamp. Postage is the accepted abbreviation for Postage and Packaging, and that means, 1) The "stamp" 2) The envelope/box 3) The address label also the following needs...

    Postage charges !!!!

Why should the postage be at cost? We have a certain number of hours in the day and if self employed, we need to make a certain amount to make it all work out. Sending stuff through the post is very expensive in terms of time. There is the packaging, delivery notes, addressing the package...

    AAW 2014 Symposium

Call me a philistine but any inspiration that might be lurking somewhere in the depths of that was surrounded by tedium, and lots of it! An edited three minute highlight would have meant that people might actually watch it. Anyway, as it was a choice between watching the other 55 mins or the...

    Postage charges !!!!

Vic, for the bolt action pen kit, Timberbits (made by Dayacom) every tiime. The reasons for this: 1) The bolt action arm is screwed in on the PSI kit and the kit from UK Penkits which is a Chinese copy. The bolt action arm can come loose. 2) The spring is quite vicious (PSI and copy) and the...

    Postage charges !!!!

There would be some logic in your dismay if the kits were made in the UK, but they are not. I take it you refer to David Lims out fit in Sydney called Timberbits. David imports them direct from the manufacturer, some mainland China, some Taiwan and sells them direct. Dont know who the reseller...

    Postage charges !!!!

I have sympathy for the retailer and can see why the customer gets told "Its our policy". Well that's true, but not very informative - but the reason is that it deflects the responsibility from the employee so that they dont have to justify the companies pricing strategy (or policy). It is...
