    D&M cheeky advert

Just received an email advertising goods at D&M Tools in Twickenham. Here's the included image: In case you were unaware, D&M supplied the diamond core bit that the robbers used in the Hatton Garden safety deposit box robbery!

    Where to stash the cash?

I hope to have the same problem shortly (if contracts on our sale ever get exchanged!). As others have said, the yield being sought is unrealistic. As is 100% safety (think Cyprus bank depositors) For safety and flexibility (i.e. withdrawal at short notice) I'd recommend he look at NS&I -...

Best way to transport a Startrite 351

I just removed the table (4 bolts) to reduce weight and me and my son loaded my bandsaw (Scheppach Basato 4) into the back of the car (hatchback with rear seats folded down), laying it on its side. Everything else was left in place. Could have removed the base if length was an issue (it wasn't...

Your latest purchase hidden from SWMBO

I don't hide purchases but my wife, like Monkeybiter's perhaps, has always been allergic to money so tends to query my higher value spending as it deprives her of an opportunity to 'help me' spend it :)

    Marking Knife

I did have an Ashley Isles marking knife but it was only single bevel and therefore difficult to use both handed i.e. left and right handed. I treated myslef to a Pfeil marking knife, which has a double bevel and a nice point to get into tight areas and am very pleased with it. If I was buying...

    Vintage Pump

The pumps I have, have a hole for oil (I think any ordinary oil will do) in the top of the cylinder barrel. I think this is to lubricate and to keep the leather (in the Kismet pumps) washer supple and provide a good seal. I've bought pressure gauges from plumbing suppliers - they're normally...

    Vintage Pump

I have 3 'Kismet' brass pumps to restore (one of many projects on hold at present) and found that web site when researching spare parts. I too got fed up with battery powered pumps (Halfords special) failing and 'newer' manual steel pumps falling apart. Apparently, 'Kismet' were the dogs...

    Why? .......

My sympathies :). That part about trying to get a simple yes or no resonates with me - I usually get a 10 minute speech, at the end of which I'm none the wiser as to any decision ](*,)

What is the Best and Your Favourite Movie of all time??

Yes, just watched the first one again last night. Excellent films (excuding the Jeremy Renner one).

What is the Best and Your Favourite Movie of all time??

Favourites? Matrix (I found the underlying concept fascinating); Lawrence of Arabia; Das Boot; Gone with the Wind; Jean De Florette/Manon Des Sources; Four Weddings and a Funeral - all have stood the test of time. Then there's the Godfather films and...... Edit to add: Great Expectations...

Best Stanley Vintage Brace - Help Please

+1 See part 6 of the articles I linked to earlier - video show of what to look for in the best braces. +1 I like the Skinner (2 jaw) braces and have a couple of these, both restored (see part 4 of the articles for a before and after shot of the brace). Been struggling to find a longer sweep...

    Spraying Cabinets Advice

On an old project I briefly considered this and decided to use filler ('cause it's what i knew) instead but edging tape sounds good. For future refernce, can you provide more details about the tape you used and fixing (self-adhesive vs glue?) and if any edge gaps occurred?

    Finally got around to it!

Is there any 'rule' on the grain direction with parquet? Just that I note (I think) that with the maple the grain direction alternates so that end grain meets side grain. Is this for appearance or to minimise movement or some other reason?

    Wiring Question

I'm no electrician so can't advise, except to say that I'm worried about that 1.5mm arctic (too small). It may be worthwhile to state what the cable length is and where (outside; underground; in conduit....etc) it's run e.g. 20m from house CU to workshop CU? Similarly it's best to state length...

Machining welded seam off inside surface of pipe

In a similar vein to what Inspector suggested, why not try a flap wheel, perhaps mounted in a flexible drive shaft (like on a dremel) which can be pushed or pulled through the pipe. Or maybe a cylinder honing/honer tool? Either buy ready made or if you have say a 25mm drum sander just wrap...

    ..........

That's fantastic - love the folds. If it's of interest and when I have a bit more time, I'll list some of the old ivory and bone pieces I have - perhaps could be incorporated as nails/teeth/eyes or whatever.

Can you help me identify this old chisel?

That would make sense. So it could be cast or even, I guess, a ring soldered together. So if the convexity of the chisel is accidental then it could be a paring chisel - maybe...
