    starter lathe for bowl turning?

You should give serious consideration to woodyturner's lathe it seems to have lots of gear with it and a nova chuck, unless that was sold. The really brilliant thing is variable speed, once you have used it it is hard to do without. Regards Peter

    Fragile blanks

One of the best investments you can get is a set of letter drills or similar metric equivalents. If you don't already know they are drill bits that go up in size from approx 6mm-12mm in 0.1 increments for the metric and 1/16" for imp. The size drill bit that most pen kits say to use is not...

    Fumed Acacia

I think I confused matters, the book is for identifying trees rather than the wood. Laburnum and False Acacia do look very similar in tree form, buy I have never seen False Acacia wood hence my question. I also didn't realise that laburnum darkens with age. It's the only wood I get offered that...

I bought a Robert Sorby Patriot chuck from Peter Childs with an insert 24x3. That way you can just buy different inserts if you want to use it on another lathe. Regards Peter

    Fumed Acacia

That looks good, I have an identification book that says False Acacia is very similar to and often mistaken for Laburnum, does the untreated heartwood have the colouring of Laburnam or is it fairly pale? Regards Peter

    Robert Sorby aftersales service

I have nothing but praise for Peter Childs, they are a first class supplier and are so helpful, it would have to be more than a few pounds difference for me to buy somewhere else. Regards Peter

    Axminster Evolution Chuck Delivery Problems

There are lots of companies who make mistakes, Axminster is one of them, but what sets them apart from almost all those other companies is that they will pull their finger out and get the problem sorted. If anyone here is given the bum's rush by any Axminster staff then they have a perfect...

    Leylandii

The lleylandi I have turned was nothing like pine, it is quite hard, lovely to turn except for the smell which is like cat pee. Maybe there are different species as I have heard people say it smells like pine, but none of the stuff I have turned smells nice, but it has all had great figuring and...

    Small Scale Electroplating

This place is perhaps the best pricing you will find, they will also help. If it is really small scale then brush plating may be worth trying as the outlay is far less and you can decide if it is worth the extra money to go to tank plating. http://gaterosplating.co.uk There is a walkthrough of...

    Lathe buying advise (copying required)

Luna are long gone I don't know if they made a dedicated copy lathe, but they did sell a copying attachment for their lathes. Pretty basic lathes though compared with today. The headstock didn't have a hollow bore on the one I had. Regards Peter
