    Any ideas what this is?

    It could be Ekki (Lophira alata), a African hardwood. I picked some up from some sea defense work I have been working on. Its really heavy and has quite a strong smell.

    Newbie question.

    Thanks for the advice. That is where I have been going wrong, in the past I haven't allowed for the socket and have gone right through so I have been taking the blank off to measure with my calipers. Your method sounds like good, I'll give it a go tonight!
