    Fed up sharpening pencils

Another vote for Kum Long Point sharpeners. I got banned from taking mine into school. The kids all started stabbing each other with their impressively sharpened pencils

    Removing banjo fingerboard.

Not sure if there is anything specific on there that will help, but I’d like to flag up the brilliant Frets.com page which has a wealth of step by step guides written and photographed by a very skilled professional luthier on all aspects of stringed instruments. The page is one of the best...

    My chiselling accident...

Can you take away the pain, but leave the swelling?

    My chiselling accident...

I did very similar with a 2tpi rip saw I’d just sharpened. For some inexplicable reason I had my thumb just under the slot as I ripped a board to test it out. Caught the thumb nail between the wood and the saw and left a deep jagged rip straight through the thumbnail and deep into the nail bed...

Wood isn't what it used to be? It's not the wood its the paint

Car body paint is usually applied in several coats; electrocoat, primer, base coat and clear. It is also baked at 150C for half an hour. The plastic components are painted elsewhere and applied in three coats; primer, basecoat and 2 pack clear then baked at 80C for half an hour. The electrocoat...

Buying and restoring old cross cut hand saws and two man saws (for firewood)

Where are you? I have a couple that I have never and will never use. You are welcome to them for free, but they would need some repair I think (wobbly handle, surface rust). I’ll dig them out and see if they’re still ok if you’re anywhere in the beds/herts/bucks area (I’m near Leighton Buzzard...

any suggestions on how to do this cut?

Use a handsaw. Seriously, it will be quick, accurate and safer. Japanese pull saw would be my choice.

    The Joys of Old Houses

I got it from this video. I saw it a while ago and thought, “that’ll come in useful one day”. First time I’ve tried it and it worked a treat.

    The Joys of Old Houses

My house was obviously built before the right angle was invented. We had the whole house surveyed and apparently there’s one right angle hidden in a built in wardrobe in my son’s room. I’m building a drawer unit for shoes in the hallway, so I thought I’d use a method I’ve always wanted to try...
