Unfortunately no - shows are a bit thin on the ground up here My comments are based on a career in engineering Regards Mick

    adapting old chisels

Hi You can get longer lengths from the major steel stockholders though whether that is going to be any more economical than buying unhandled tools is questionable. With regard to fabricating turning tools from old chisels - I'm in the don't do it camp as far as beginners go. From files - a...

    Sorby ProEdge

Hi I use a Tormek for routine sharpening. I have modified a RP 8" grinder to run backwards and accept the Tormek jigs for re-profiling. Regards Mick

    Sorby ProEdge

Hi Yes - I'm aware that the tool edge temperature will be slightly affected but in the case of high speed steel, it's not really a consideration, (and probably not so in carbon steel either). My issue with the belt direction is more driven by the potential to catch or, dare I suggest, form...

    Sorby ProEdge

Hi I must admit, I've never understood why Sorby make the belt motion towards the tool and not away. If I ever buy one I think a change of direction would be the first thing I'd consider. Regards Mick

    Metal Paint

Hi I've had very good results using Japlac enamal - with a good brush you can get a finish to rival a sprayed one. Regards Mick

    ...........

Hi Any reasonable quality lathe will do what you want - I'd look for a Record Power / Coronet one second hand - if it's too big for your space you can always cut the bed bars down. Something like this can be bought second hand for a good price https://www.buckandhickman.com/find/cat ...

What would you do with these?

Hi They could be turned into salt / pepper grinders with very little waste - or dare I say, rolling pins with a quick skim Regards Mick

    Axminster multi head live centre

That's a possibility - though I do the same with my Sorby revolving centre all out of wood - dispensing with the face plate. One disadvantage of the Axi one I think is that it's not hollow - so doesn't cater for long hole boring

    Axminster multi head live centre

They say 30mm diameter mini faceplate with a central screw which is very useful when turning long stemmed goblets. For use with the Axminster Multi-head live revolving centre. But I can't for the life of me see how

Tempering in oven, gas or electric?

Hi I'd have thought it would be more accurate to temper by colour in a sand / swarf tray on a gas ring, (unless the parts are large). Regards Mick

Advice needed - beech bowl finishing

Hi If you can do that with a 6mm gouge you'll be really pleased with 10mm or 13mm. I wouldn't consider producing a bowl of that size and style with a 6mm gouge. You need to sort out your sharpening and, based on your photos, you'll fly from there. Regards Mick

I've got a workshop in the offing!!!

Hi Steel door, internal steel bars / shutters on the windows and removable internal beams across the garage door to prevent it opening? Curtains on the windows if you don't fit shutters Regards Mick

Where to buy Robert Sorby turning tools online good value

Hi I've had mine for about 15 years :) Give it a go by all means - but don't expect too much of an improvement over a sharp and well presented 1/8" tool Regards Mick

Where to buy Robert Sorby turning tools online good value

Hi I have the slim fluted parting tool and I believe posters may be confusing this with the fluted parting tool. The slim fluted parting tool: http://www.robert-sorby.co.uk/woodturni ... rting-tool In this tool the contact surface with the rest is not fluted, although quite small at 2mm, (the...

    Getting ready for new lathe...

In order for a helicopter to function reliably all of it's major rotating components are balanced statically and dynamically - to reduce vibration. Bearing loads are highest in the axial direction due to lifting or 'centrifugal' forces. I think I'd look to a heavy vehicle wheel bearing set for...
