Wenge is a nightmare! Challenge Box #4

Wenge is a very beautiful wood, but boy did it really tick me off this last week! Any tips or tricks to avoid chipping and blow-out? I tried several things, but it's so brittle...especially the quarter sawn stuff. My intention for the Box-a-Week build was to make three, small sliding lid boxes...

    Building a box a week in 2014

Hey gang, I've been scarce on the forums for a while now. I started a bit of a personal challenge to build a box every week in 2014, trying to incorporate as many new skills as I can along the way. I've made a few blog posts (also scarce until recently) on my first three boxes, with this last...

    Japanese Chisels

I'm going to start working with them a lot more. Funny thing is that I've seen other woodworkers treat them rather preciously too. I've read lots of comments about how they're special and they only use them in certain circumstances. Seems kind of silly...I mean Japanese woodworkers have been...

    Japanese Chisels

Looks like I need to stop babying them so much and give them more action! I do like the feel of the handle in relation to the iron for any paring operations. I may need to build another chisel rack so that they're out on the bench and not tucked in the drawer.

    Japanese Chisels

I acquired this set several years ago from Japan Woodworker (?) I don't use them often, but when I do they are fantastic. I think I might baby them too much, so I don't always think to grab them. Do any of you use Japanese chisels as your regular go-to's? http://secondwindworkshop.blogspot.com/...

    Workbench upgrade for #1 Son

Some progress. Lots of vacation and work travel over the past four months, so it's been slower going than I had hoped. All the joinery is done and the dowel tenons are cut and fit. I still need to go pick up some Baltic Birch ply for the seats and backs and then it's on to assembly. It's...

    Workbench upgrade for #1 Son

 "Don't sand the tools" "Don't glue that to the table" There are lots of those little "whoa" moments, but all part of the teaching process...shop skills for him, patience for me! :)

    Workbench upgrade for #1 Son

How many of you have a spot carved out in your shop for your budding woodworkers? http://secondwindworkshop.blogspot.com/ ... bench.html It’s fun to watch the boy “work”, and even though things take twice as long when he “helps” I wouldn’t trade the time for anything.

    Older Shop Art Piece

I have certainly been accused of having a rather diverse taste in art! :)

    Older Shop Art Piece

Here’s a look at a Mondrian inspired piece I made about four years ago. I put a blog entry together for my new friends in an online Mid Century Modern group. http://secondwindworkshop.blogspot.com/ ... -piet.html

    Take a Break!

Every now and then…drop the woodworking and look around. I'm just wrapping up a great week away with the family and was really reminded how hard, yet how needed, it is to unplug. Not sure how hard it is for you guys but these past couple years have been very busy with the day job and travel. I...

    mirco jig gripper

I picked one up a few years back at The Woodworking Show and I really like mine. I've used it to trim down very thin stock to use for corner keys in boxes and it made what could have been a very dangerous procedure on the table saw feel very safe. The cuts came out perfect as well.

The Long Road Home - Dad's Old Cabinet Bench

Very cool Rod. The saws are beautiful. Did your Dad do any carving while you were growing up? Arlington is the second or third largest national cemetery here in the US. Over 400,000 soldiers and family members are buried there now. Over the years they've conducted several expansion...

    The Latest Herd of Boxes

I used 1/4 inch Baltic Birch plywood. I rabbeted the edges down to 1/8 inch to fit into a holding groove. I'll line the insides with felt and then give a swipe of the Danish Oil on the bottom after I sign them.

The Long Road Home - Dad's Old Cabinet Bench

A few weeks ago I traveled back east for Memorial Day and to bring home some of my Dad's things from his old shop. His cabinet bench is a real treasure to me and its nice to have it here in my shop now. http://secondwindworkshop.blogspot.com/ ... -home.html What are your prized treasures...

A little more wisdom from Old Jim

http://secondwindworkshop.blogspot.com/ ... art-2.html More travel means more reading time. I’m really enjoying James Krenov’s literary offerings. How does what you have and where you work influence the things you build…or does it? Do you find solutions yourself, hold off on projects, or go...

    first bandsaw box

Nicely done! I made some copies of patterns to try my first bandsawn box soon...when I clear the bench of the other projects in the works! :)
